TOPIC: Starlight Purple Haze Game

Some random thoughts on the upcoming Starlight Game and this piece of club content:

i. It’s great to see the Starlight Game continue as a tradition. The club hasn’t given fans much reason to be proud of it lately (or perhaps ever), but things like this help.

ii. That said, the decision in a previous year to hold the Starlight Game for an ‘away’ game against GC17 at Optus remains one of the low points of Freo’s off-field decision-making in the club’s history (and there’s no shortage for competition on that front). I’m still mad about it.

iii. Walters is clearly trying to do the right thing by not cartwheeling in a close game, but I say bugger that: either tell GWS it might happen ahead of time, or don’t, let them get mad, and kick another 4 goals and tell them to stick it up their jumper.

iv. I love the idea of Walters doing a ‘Wiz’, and as much as it’s wonderful the Wiz had a signature celebration, I think it’s a celebration so good that should be handed down (with the Wizard’s blessing) in a line of successive Freo players in perpetuity. Wiz should come back to the club for the tradition handover every few years, and I think Freo and the AFL treated Wiz pretty poorly at times, and should reach out more often. Walters should embrace it for a few years, then hand it to Henry.

v. My view that Andrew Brayshaw is allergic to kicking goals seems to be shared by Andrew Brayshaw. He seems like a good kid, but I’d rather his response be to promise that he’ll come out and kick 2 goals, rather than laugh it off as an impossibility. Is it possible Andrew is too nice?

vi. The Purple Haze bit is obviously a bit redundant given the purple-washing of the club colours, but I wish they’d bring the Purple Haze jumper back. It’s probably my favourite of the club jumpers.

vii. Freo are asking that people pledge a donation for every goal kicked. Get involved. It will do more good than your donation to the club earlier this year, and it’s literally not asking much based on our scoring so far this season. Freo is estimating 7 goals. Ouch. More reason to pick Jesse Hogan, I reckon.

My understanding is that there won't be anyone collecting at the game tomorrow for the Starlight Foundation. Go on, grab your credit card and click on the link. I'll be happy if we kick a bag full.

Another random thought for the collection Morgan:
How about someone actually plays Purple Haze by Hendrix over the PA instead of the usual 'atmosphere-by-numbers' tunes we have to endure? Either that, or get Troy to smash a few bars of it out at full blast?
On that topic, get something a bit more edgy played. I've had enough dinner jacket rock to last me a lifetime. Its about time we discarded the complex matchday experience algorithim and just chucked some variety into the playlist.

Yeah, ok, so I have had a beer, but you know it makes sense!

Do we need any music at the game??? Pay your money and go to a concert if you want to have music in an arena.

I like this Starlight pledge concept for each goal kicked. They could get really creative in future years, and give the pledger several options to choose from. For instance, dollar pledges for:
- every stutter step in Rory Lobb’s set shot goal routine
- every Connor Blakely grubber kick
- every time Michael Walters gets his head ripped off by ducking a tackle
etc.

I think it damages the integrity of the game and I hope it doesn't become a permanent thing.

I look at it though it could make our forward line more potent.

What if they're not good at it. What if low scoring, methodical movement is their best chance of winning. Will they settle for that or is their pressure to change it up for the promotion.

You do this sort of thing in charity matches, not real games. I understand the reasons for it, it's an amazing cause but I wouldn't like to see this become a regular thing in the league.

It’s like $5000 a goal. If the club is worried they let Starlight Foundation down by not scoring I’m sure they can chip in to make up the difference.

Yeah, nah. Trusting someone to do the right thing is not how conflict of interest works.

Obviously you, the league and the club don't share my view.

Conflict of interest in the AFL?

Surely not.

where is the actual conflict of interest?

what actual benefit is the club or any of its players or employees receiving from the outcome of the “goals x $” being paid to the charity here? none, me thinks.

there are huge issues re: integrity and conflicts that we need to redress. This initiative for Starlight is not one of them.
