The point of what Ron Alexander was making is that it's not them calling the shots and it should be. He didn't name the people who control football but two pretty obvious ones -
Kerry Stokes would have infinitely more control over football than any commisioner because he controls the broadcaster.
Trevor Nisbett would have infinitely more control because he controls the income stream.
And I'd imagine the CEO's of the major sponsors of the Eagles hold sway over Nisbett.
By making the AFL clubs pay a percentage of profit, it allows them to manipulate their books to withhold money. The Eagles are sitting on tens of milions in cash reserves that could have been funding grass roots football if the payments had been tied to revenue.
