I had just finished reading this and came to DL to post the link. It’s a credit to Shane and others on this site that these issues get flagged.
Muir’s story is both a reminder of the damage that has been done, the progress that has been made and the work that still remains. No doubt that the Henry’s and Walters of this day and age are better supported but equally they still cop totally unacceptable crap from plenty of punters, just ask Adam Goodes and Eddie Betts.
The AFL must reach out to players such as Muir and take some restorative action. If they don’t respond to an article like this they would simply be showing that racism is still embedded at the top levels.

Thanks Shane. A very moving article highlighting the difficulties of being a brilliant athlete, indigenous and suffering a mental health problem. I guess he was triply exceptional and that's where the it all starts. He wasn't typical.
If we look back at our team's recruiting perhaps we could identify players who may also fit some of these categories and not been as successful as they could as they are clearly different. A recently released player comes to mind.

It's hard to know what to say after reading that.

The VFL allowed the worst sort of treatment to be handed out then punished the victim when he responded. You can't just blame the VFL, Australia let this man down badly.

There is a ton of repair work needed. Long overdue.

On ABC's Offsiders program this morning, Kelli Underwood introduces the topic of this must-read article by saying it's about Robbie "Mad Dog" Muir. (Her words, not mine).

Either she hasn't read the article and is in no position to say whether it's a must-read or not, or she read it and chose to ignore one of the basic premises behind it, which is his hatred of the nickname and all it represents to him. Either way, not good enough. We just keep repeating the same problems, over and over.

A just posted story on the ABC News website outlines St Kilda's unreserved apology to Robert Maguire and resolution to work on making some kind of reparation. Unike many insincere apologies, this one appears genuine.

We still have a long way to go though.

I don't think you want to spend this round talking about all the injustices done to Aboriginal footballers because Eddie Betts smile is going to win more hearts than self reflection but the AFL still needs to reconcile with these individuals who copped so much, and were subsequently punished for it; not just in suspensions but reputations they followed them outside of football.

They need to at least attempt to make better what they made worse. Be great if they could quietly approach people like Muir and see what needs to be done to reconcile what they were put through, encouraged by the system which was rewarding racism and so encouraging racism.

And on the list, apologise to Jeff Farmer for leaving him out of the Indigenous Team of the Century and then put him in the Hall of Fame.

First indigenous player to kick 400 goals, and would have sold more tickets to the footy than most.

I was watching Offsiders as well docked and was also outraged by the sloppy (at best) effort by Kelli. I jumped on the Offsider website and used the Contact Us section to register my protest. I suggest you do the same docked. They need to open next week’s programme with an apology.
