It’s rare to see the coached so aligned in their votes, Ryan, Mundy and Serong unanimous as 5,4 & 3 then Maynard with a 2&1 vote, Tabs the other 2 and Sidebottom the final 1.
Clearly Bucks and JL both looking for the same traits in their players.

OR, they just thought they were the best 6 players on the ground, I would not strongly disagree with them.

Longmuir would have liked the Maynard, Matera match. Maynard a foot taller and 15 kilos heavier would get run around by Matera.

Trouble he was also quicker than Matera. I don't bag our players as a general rule. but geez!!!

Matera gave away 13cm to Maynard who is 186cm tall (a medium size player) but didn't show any intent to compete when the ball was in the air. Even minimal pressure in wet/slippery conditions brings the ball to ground but he couldn't do that. Maynard was a huge part of our inability to score early in the game.

If the choice is between a 28 year old small forward who's kicked 3 goals in 5 games or kids like Crowden, Schultz, Sturt, Frederick, Henry etc, I know who I'm selecting. Develop the kids, Matera isn't going to make a difference to our future except to stunt the growth of the youngsters. If we get too many injuries, then he can have a run.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Maynard took 8 intercept marks, mostly playing on Matera who was 14cm shorter. It was a stupid matchup that didn't work.

It wasn't Matera's fault, how are you supposed to compete against someone over a foot taller and 16kg heavier? Lobb was also playing forward of the ball, there's a thought.

AFL website: Maynard 189 cm, 93kg; Matera 175 cm, 77 kg.

Geelong had spare intercept markers the week before.

The team still has a lot to learn. There was still blazing away forward. Only when they kicked it to a tall near the boundary line did they make any ground.

The fact that our full back was BOG says a lot. Collingwood had more scoring shots, Freo kicked straighter and won.

Enjoy the 12 point win but we are hardly premiership favourites in 2020. But it's building and watch out 2022.

I quickly grabbed heights from their wikipedia pages but 14cm is only 5 inches, enough for a lot of people to compete with!

Schultz was able to bring the ball to ground when it was kicked his way, on some occasions against two opponents. You just need to make a contest and try to split it, if you're conceding it before the ball even gets there it's a huge problem.

Another problem is a lack of talls across the ground with all of Matera, Crowden, Schultz, Frederick and Colyer rotating through the forwardline and needing to compete for balls in the air. It's a part of the job of every forward to not be so easily out-marked and Matera failed there miserably.

5.5 inches thank you. And don't let anyone tell you that size doesn't matter.

And 16kg is only 35 lb. You'd bag Matera for not competing against Pavlich.

I've always liked Matera, had him in my DuFFLe side for a number of years and played with him a few times as a junior. I was happy to have him come over from GC when he did and see if he could add something to our forwardline.

His time is done though, he's had a lot of opportunities and never really grabbed them. It's the next generations turn now.

Luke Ryan has been competing against much taller and bigger opponents for weeks now. It can be done, with sufficient intent.

With those votes I thought you could swap Maynard for Hughes without a problem - Hughes was huge for us in the first quarter, Maynard for them in the fourth.

Just a question, would Maynard have taken 8 intercept marks playing on Ballas???

Pretty hard to take intercept marks RM with your dacks around your knees and the opposition player laughing at you as he runs off with the ball.
