Consider for a moment, where we were, 12 months ago today...
Yup, we'd just beat Geelong - perhaps our best win for 2019.
However, our previous 8 weeks hadn't been too flash....some beltings, some narrow losses....but - most importantly - a miserable game plan that 'stifled all hope'.

And things deteriorated very much from the 1st week of August 2019.

12mths on ...despite some floggings, despite some injuries....for the first time in a very long time, we have 'hope'!!

Tabs is clunking (and kicking ) 'em. He now has a simple game plan to follow that revolves around him staying in the forward line.

We have young fellows being able to be freevto exhibit their natural skills - I was so pleased for Mitch Crowden yesterday....

We are building a backline thats gonna be 'as tough as tungsten,' but flexible too....I really like Watson & Duman yesterday, and Ryan is showing them how to 'battle on' when out of your depth'....

And we have a team that are being allowed to learn 'what's right' & 'whats wrong' rather than being told that there's only 1 way....

The ball movement & skills where as good as we've seen yesterday. Yep, there was some stuff ups...but we are building...and starting to build very quickly.

Clete, the intense pressure is back, it was a feature of Freo in the Connoly/Harvey years, and carried into the early Lyon era, then faded as the enormous physical load of Lyon's game and training strategies wore the players down. The shortened game times & season length may actually be a huge benefit in the recovery of Freo's older players to be able to go back to their intense best.

All the great teams have their mistakes & "stuff ups" as well as the bottom of the ladder teams, and it is how you react to and recover from those mistakes that determines your success. Freo are starting to react instinctively when something goes wrong, giving the footy to the first option, giving to a voice rather than a set play. This is opening up our play and enabling us to break lines. Blakely was a good example of that last night, and so was Serong. Crowden as well.

I'm enjoying the footy more this year. But the idea that Tabs stays anywhere near goals is a furphy. One of his key roles is to be a marking target for the long kick out of defence - and that is usually on the defensive side of the wing.

RR, he is leading at the player with the footy now, instead of having to run into the 50 and lead across the ground or away from the kicker. This is allowing him to read the play better. Sure, sometimes he is leading a long way up the ground, but he is starting from inside 50, and is also taking more marks inside 50 while leading at the play.

Can't agree more with this post. We finally have a game plan that allows us to play skillful (and watchable) football where we move the ball up the ground using skills rather than forcing it forward with 'effort' of the previous regime.

We will make some mistakes along the way and we will have some shockers especially while the core of the team matures but for me from the very first game of the season we have shown glimpses that we are finally on the right track with the 'rebuild'. Look at what our younger players are showing out there, some of the 'regulars' might find it hard to break into the team if the incumbents keep performing the way they have.

I’m enjoying the footy more this year but I think the most intense pressure I’ve ever seen applied by a Freo team, was through 2013-early 15 under Lyon.

Talking about pressure, it was interesting watching the commentary that showed our pressure was way off the chart. They even mentioned they needed a longer chart.
