Although I wonder if some of this is self-serving revisionism, it is facinating. Maybe Kepler should have been co-captain?

I reckon that's all crap. He is just describing what he saw, not discovering how they got there. It's a description of what a functional organisation looks like.

When you're in charge of a successful team, people listen to you. When people listen to you, you'll talk more and when a team is doing well, people will tolerate each other to keep the show on the road.

If you tried to recreate his experiment in an unsuccessful team, it wouldn't become successful.

Agree with your first comment Shane. This looks like a retrofit to align with a preconseption. For starters, everyone knows that good leadership is key to success and captains are part of that leadership, but to assume that a particular type of captain is vital is too simplistic. Take the Bill Cartright example. No championships during his 11 years at the Knicks, then wins three next to Jordan at the Bulls (91-93) but they dont win it when Jordan leaves in 94, yet the article suggests he was more imprtant than Jordan .... not so sure about that.

Point taken RR (fair cop), however, I still think the article is short on support for the author's theory.

Yeah, where's his research on EF winning those premierships when there was about three teams in the comp and the convicts were let out of gaol to play.

I think he's wasted 11 years researching.

If he thought the 'Hollywood ideal' of great players making great captains, he lacks insight and imagination. Great players can be crap captains and useless leaders. Jordan is a perfect example why.

I remember a few years ago researchers conducted a study of successful NBA teams that found a correlation between teams winning and the number of high fives they gave, so coaches and team managers of bad teams starting mandating their players give more high fives.

This reminds me a bit of that.
