The cutting of the list is predicated upon a solution the the virus huh?

If covid 19 is still forcing a mish mash of fixtures next year, Theres no way a list of 40 will cut it

. Surely that puts more pressure on clubs and players?? And belittles the game further??

Anyhow, lets say the cut is implemented , is it young (cheap) "could be's" (ie North , Giro, Dixon , O'Reily types ; or , is it older, experienced, but injured/ clapped out, 'near the end' types like Hill, Mundy, Pearce, Cam Hambling etc...??

Does anyone miss Ryan Nyhuis, Max Duffy or Brady Grey?

At the end of the day, most cut players don't get picked up by someone else.

Neither will players cut at the end of this season. So whoever it ends up being isn't really good enough in the first place.

Except for de Boer and Collins, players like Barlow, Mzungu, Sheridan, Hendrix and Sutcliffe didn't really establish themselves at their 2nd club to any great extent either.

I'm not going to lose sleep if guys like Giro, Crowden, Switkowski, Schultz, North or Dixon get cut. If they can't get a game for a bottom 4 side, they're not good enough.

having looked at the maths, I reckon if you wanted to lump it all with the top players only, you’d be asking 25 to 30 players to take a 50% cut to give 126 blokes an average of $75K a year. A bit of a stretch too far for mine.

If you slide the scale down to those earning $300K or more, you’d probably be asking all of those guys for around 8% of their salary.

Cut the unnecessary off field staff, that would cover costs, Freo have a complete rehabilitation staff that would improve our on-field performances if they sacrificed themselves for the good of the 15%.

Surely a 20% pay cut - across the board - sorts all this out??

I mean what are are their options? ....continue being part of an AFL team with all the luxury it brings, or, go back to plumbing??

I mean what bargaining power has any 'well paid ' player got if every AFL club has to suffer a 20% 'Covid special' salary cap cut.??

Clearly they have a choice ..keep playing or quit. Don't think many would quit....

I make it more like a 5% cut for the remaining players (that's without factoring in coaches) but the point is, the money wouldn't be a savings because the TPP wouldn't move. The same pool of money would be being redistributed upwards.

I thought the theory was, if you cut playing list size you can also cut football department size, less coaches, medics, the whole lot get cut by 10-20%
Personally I think you can do that by making it a hard cap on football dept spending rather than list size, let clubs decide if they want to spend it all of one head coach or 8 ass coaches.

Speaking of salaries. Interesting numbers reported this weekend of AFL’s 100 highest paid players. Freo have 4 in the list:
#3 Fyfe
#54 Lobb
#61 Walters
#72 Hogan

West Coast have 7, including 6 in the top 50:
#7 McGovern
#18 Gaff
#23 Yeo
#29 Kelly
#34 Shuey
#47 Darling
#90 Naitanui.

They have paid quite heavily to keep their team together and if they don’t get a flag in next couple of years could be falling off a cliff (ageing overpaid stars and lack of draft picks).

Surely Hogan has performance targets in his such as actually playing.
Seeing Lobb and Hogan there anybody want to reevaluate their judgement on Taberner.
Dollar for dollar he should make a couple of more mistakes, probably doesn’t need to get it as much as he currently is either.

Here’s hoping one of those ‘highly paid’ four eventually becomes as useful and has an impact similar as the other three players.

It was in the local paper, and they were just estimates. If you're guessing anyway, you may as well guess that there are plenty of local players mentioned in your copy.

The list was done by the Herald Sun, don’t think there was any local angle.
