I suspect if the people involved swapped places, the penalty would have involved less benefit of the doubt.

Next round it will get out of hand with lots of players thinking, "A punch in the head, is it worth $1000? Why, yes, I think it is." And then the AFL will suddenly say that any closed fist contact to the head will result in a suspension.

After all, why change the way they've always handled this sort of thing?

What a constructive piece of journalism. 3 weeks is the minimum sentence once an incident gets referred to the tribunal, so he got off as light as the AFFL could let him. He should have got another 3 weeks for the attempt later in the game, because, as the AFFL have stated, when it comes to bumps gone wrong, it is about the potential for injury, not the result as far as injury goes.
