Full credit to the Dockerland punters who spotted Tim English before he was drafted. Just watching him play tonight you can see he is going to be a star. He’d look bloody good in purple.

17 hit outs in a dominant team on the night - the other two Sydney rucks combined for 44. Yet the Bullies had four more clearances and lead for the entire game. As a ruckman English was a dummy - as a player, he was in the best five on the ground

That's an indicator of good midfield coaching - clearly the Bullies went into the game with a plan of sharking the opposition ruck taps. Sydney had no answer - not surprising with Flappy in the box.

This is what Freo should do, play off the opposition ruck. I've said this before, but tonight provides a good video resource for coaches wondering how to do it.

For someone his size he is a smooth mover and uses the ball well. Given his lack of experience and relatively undeveloped body he will only get better in the ruck.

You may as well just play an extra midfielder if you want English in the side. He's been exposed and the Dogs humiliated out of the middle on so many occasions, I'm surprised they still refer to him as a ruckman.

Against any side with a decent ruckman, the Dogs lose the centre clearances and most likely the game as a result of English inability to contest the tap. Watch what Grundy did to him in round 1 or Marshall/Ryder in round 2. If we're happy to lose the centre clearance in most games then you may as well play Fyfe or Mundy in the ruck as an extra player when it hits the ground.

Highlighting his game against the Swans and calling the Dogs plan to rove to the opposition ruckman a good move isn't accurate. It's an outlier given Sinclair isn't a good tap ruckman and Naismtih spent half the game on the bench as he returned from injury but turned the Swans midfield into a dominant force on the rare occasion he went in.

Also, Darcy is a year younger than English but would absolutely rag doll him in the ruck or marking contests. I'd much prefer an actual ruckman paired with midfielders.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I circulated an off-season survey on Dockerland a few years back, and something like 60% of people would have taken English in his draft.

I think he's a really interesting player, but I think you'd need to pair him with a big goomba to take the bulk of the ruckwork, and use English around the ground a bit more. At that point you would have to ask what position he plays, and if he's just milling about the place could you use a better player in that milling about the place role.

I think a good coach figures out a way to get the best out of him, but I'm still not 100% sure what that would be.

If you packed on the pounds and turned Tim into a goomba ruckman he would end up having a pinhead. Proportionally, that is - but that's interesting too.

I don't often agree with Bizkit but he is spot on. Yes he is only 21 or whatever with some upside but so is Darcy.

Injuries are a problem at the moment but do you want to win the taps at ball ups or don't you? English is lucky to win 20 hit outs a game and was slaughtered in Rounds 1 & 2.

We have a Tim English already anyway - he goes by the name Rory Lobb and that guy is a superstar.

The way English plays, he could solve our CHB/CHF problems, either by filling one of those spots, or playing as a BB midfielder and allowing Fyfe to play Key Position.
