Mark McGowan won’t rule out paying for Optus Stadium AFL grand final

Mark McGowan has not ruled out paying to host an Optus Stadium grand final but stressed he did not want to “set taxpayers up for an ask” and that Perth was the “sensible” location for the decider if the MCG was unable to welcome crowds.

The Premier was responding to calls from Collingwood president Eddie McGuire who this morning insisted that WA would have to “buy” the rights to host the grand final if it was to shift from Melbourne.

“If they were prepared to buy it (they may be able to host), because don’t forget the Victorian Government have shelled out a fair bit of money to keep the grand final at the MCG,” Mr McGuire told Channel Nine.

I wonder how much this once off good deed is going to set us back?

I’m pretty sure Eddie had a hand in bringing the AFL, MCC and Victorian Government to the table to hammer out the deal that locked in MCG Grand Finals for the foreseeable future.

I think it’s personal for him, and fair enough, it’s a pretty great deal for everyone involved in Victorian football.

He was involved in the deal that saw the MCG relinquish the exclusive right to at least 1 prelim, that was a great deal for Collingwood, not so great for other Victorian clubs.
