To my eye we look to be tracking ok. We won 8, 8 and 9 games the last three years (38% percent of our games), so although we sucked we still found a way to win some games – mostly because Fyfe and Walters are so good. I didn’t have any real expectations for the start of this year, because teams can often take a small backwards step before going forwards. It’s probably more the case when the start of the season is interrupted.
I reckon blaming a coach for players not adjusting to a mid-quarter downpour is giving the players an out; blaming a coach that has been gone the better part of a year is a stretch. Port were just better than us in every way, and it especially told when the conditions required tough, direct football and the players had to think on their feet.
The main quibble with JLo right now is that if he manages Walters correctly he could be a game-winner for a few more years, and playing him in middle while we suck might be putting undue burden on him. I get that you don’t want to get smashed in the midfield, and JLo is entitled to see what he has, but in the same way CC played Pav in the middle to protect his body during the rebuild, I’d like to see guys like Cerra, Blakely and Serong get more time in the middle with Walters spending more time forward.
