TOPIC: Disappointed JLo

While watching the second quarter in the wet, I couldn't believe how much we continued to over possess, handball sideways and backwards and not try to get the ball forward. In slippery and torrential conditions that don't cater to high possession and skillful play styles, it's common sense to play the percentages and move the ball forward.

It was something I watched a lot of under RL and in previous years where we tried to do far too much in conditions not suited for it. The players maintained that attitude and RL was never critical of it, it seemed to be part of his anywhere, anytime mantra of his game style trumps all.

At half time JLo was briefly interviewed and asked what went wrong. To paraphrase, he said they played dumb footy and didn't adjust to the conditions. They over possessed the ball and didn't try to take territory resulting in an inability to get the footy forward and having no one stationed there when they finally did.

Now I doubt JLo has had much or any chance to teach the players what to do in wet weather situations and it could just be speculation on my part but I would think the players have been drilled to play a certain way by RL in the past regardless of the situation and we saw the result of that in the second quarter. We played much better football after half time and we would have won if not for that second quarter failure.

I did enjoy the honesty provided by JLo in that half time interview, he was brutally honest as to what went wrong and determined to fix it, announcing we'd be keeping our structure ahead of the ball and not flooding defence as they had done automatically in the second quarter much to JLo's disappointment. It was refreshing and reassured me we're in good hands with JLo at the helm.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Had he not seen Freo play in the wet before? Has he not run any tapes of RL games where they play dumb footy - wet or dry? Not hard to find plenty. I'm gobsmacked this is a new phenomenon to him.

He's had an extra long preseason to work with this team. Wouldn't you have had a crack at fixing them then? I watched most of the game yesterday, and Lyon might as well still been coaching.

Wet Weather footy is a great test and most times sees the higher skilled and better developed team win out. In our 25 year history I have only been confident of a win in the wet for about 5 of those years.
In 2006 and 2012-2015 we were almost unbeatable in the wet.
Yesterdays result showed exactly where we are at. We are underskilled and still not strong enough.
Lets hope we can turn it around quickly.

I'm not sure how many times you think they've trained in the wet given a Perth summer and then covid-19 restrictions but that seems overly harsh to throw the blame on JLo for not having rid the side of RL tactics yet.

What happened in the second quarter clearly wasn't due to his instructions.

I didn't see any signs of JLo being surprised but he's clearly identified where the problem lies....between the players ears.

Biz is right. You can hardly have great expectations after a single preseason followed up by a very long break where the players couldn't train as a team and I doubt you can coach Roly out of the players in a few weeks.

What I saw was a bunch of players trying to execute dry weather actions in a tropical downpour, which is generally a pretty recipe for 'not working'. He's right, we played dumb football and port took full advantage. But we're a work in progress and dumb football is going to show up while this team is in adjustment and development.

We're not going for any flags this year but we are getting game time into new players and I'm happy with that at this stage.

Talking about new players, I'd like to see them blood a new player each week while we're up there in the hub atleast.

To say he can't see how they play in the wet because it's dry is Perth, is rubbish. Port managed to keep scoring while getting soaked.

He has tapes of games to go on. He would/should already have a good idea where players are at, and how the team operates under pressure. Freo have played dumb footy and overused the ball for years.

He's only just seeing the problem now?

I think, according to Longmuir, the prospect of it being wet in the game was discussed prior to the game by coach and players, albeit they thought it would happen in the first quarter.

It seems we currently haven’t got enough common sense out on the ground to adapt to wet weather footy. A school kid footy player would’ve known what to do in those conditions. Luke Ryan mentioned in the interview with him we once again over possessed ‘hand balled around the contest a little bit’. I’d suggest they do that so much at training it becomes second nature/ reflex stuff and only the smart players like Mundy etc adapt quickly. It’s a % thing, do I try to make a 50/50 handball work or move it forward with a kick hoping players up forward read the play. Port often seemed better at reading the play too.

Current coach and assistants need to address this, or maybe there’s not a lot of common sense in there either.

Bloody Drum, Connolly, Harvey and Lyon.

Drubbing, nowhere did Longmuir say he was surprised by the dumb footy played by Freo in the wet. He did say he was disappointed, as were many supporters, and 1 or 2 players. To see Fyfe bust through a pack, taking clean possession then handball to a player 2 feet away, is not Longmuirs fault.

The idiot commentators reckoned he was trying to bring teammates into the game. No, he reverted to the dumb RL style of play which says you can't go forward until all the forwards behind you have run forward. If he hasn't realised we have a new tactitian at the helm when pressure goes on, some of our 3 & 4 year players are going to struggle with it.

The players we need out there are the new players, (draftees and mature recruits from other clubs) who have not been indoctrinated by Lyon.

Lyon the indoctrinatior/hypnotist, it makes sense now that’s what those funny eyes were doing.

Fyfe was probably hoping he could get in front of himself for a Fyfe to Fyfe ball movement.

For me it was pretty basic watching the game - Port simply pushed us to the periphery and then ran rampant in the middle. Yes, just like a RoLy structure.

I would've used The Owl in wet weather, not Sturt - what we need is low to the ground tackling beasts (not skinny kids that try to kick a 50m goal on a broken ankle).

I don’t know if Lyon was to blame but if we could all see it, I think our on field leaders should’ve been able to see it.
I though a lot of our senior players had a poor day yesterday. Conca had a stinker, Walters wasn’t as effective as usual and Mundy had a second poor game.
Looking forward to the WA hub

Before the game I said that it would take the rest of this season and most, if not all, of next year to get rid of the Roly style, and even then, I don't think it will be totally eradicated. It would seem that the prediction was at least in part correct v Port. The first quarter did show some promise of things to come and just about anything is preferable to watching last season's efforts.
