Yeah, Polly, but it didn't take the unnamable one very long to knock that goalkicking half back flanker nonsense out of his game. I notice he didn't kick a goal in his second game for us ( or his third) (I admit I did not carry on tooo far with my research, but I assume from Polly's research that he has not kicked any goals in subsequent games.)

Wilson doesn't need to kick goals, he is a defender. He needs to kick it to forwards that do. He can do that running from behind centre. Same goes for Ryan, Conca, Young or whoever else plays on the HBF.

Or he could kick it to Hill on the WING. Steve may have kicked one or two good ones streaming into the forward line from memory....

Luke Ryan is a beneficiary of how good a footballer Wilson is.

Clubs don’t want Wilson using the ball coming out of the backline so they put more time in to locking him down.

I dream of a utopia where all the guys in our back half are good if not exceptional users of the football.

Edit - absolutely rate Luke Ryan ... but add in Young if even half the hype is true, Alex P, Hamling, Logue starts to look pretty good down there.

Davo, from memory, he should be kicking to Stephen, not on the wing, but just off the bench.

He is not the same player Morgan.

Donald would be proud of that 'alternate fact'.!

In 77 games for GWS he kicked 16 .14....or better put took 30 shots.

In 39 games for us, he's kicked 1.3. Ie 4 shots.

Don't tell me he's been used the same way in his last 39 games that he was in his previous 77.

Hopefully J-Lo frees him up and lets him use his creativity, i...in complete contrast to the cloistered life he lived under the previous bloke who you love to defend so much.

Maybe you were seeing something I wasn't, but I thought he was someone who played with a bit of freedom. We know he moved the ball the same amount, but what's the best measure of how much he got up the ground?

2016 GWS: 0.1 goals, 0.3 goal assists and 3.2 inside 50s per game
2017 GWS: 0.2 goals, 0.3 goal assists and 3.8 inside 50s per game
2018 Freo: 0.1 goals, 0.4 goal assists and 3.3 inside 50s per game
2019 Freo: 0.0 goals, 0.1 goal assists and 2.1 inside 50s per game

Again, he's basically been the same player for 4 years, albeit he didn't run forward as much last year, but I thought he wasn't moving as well generally because of his toe.

The stats probably don't prove anything, but it wasn't like he was chained to the point post.

He must have been - kicking one goal in two years puts him in Shane Parker country.

He kicked 7 goals in 2 seasons with GWS, 1 in 2 seasons with Freo. Seems pretty simple to read for me.

As compared to his last two years at GWS for Freo Wilson had almost exactly the same number of possessions, same running bounces, same distance covered, same inside 50s, same number of behinds, but kicked 3 fewer goals in a 22 game season. It’s a weird barrow to push that despite that rather unusual consistency over a four year block across two teams, because he had one fewer shot at goal every 7 games he was somehow shackled by a coach.

I would like to see JLo play Wilson up the ground a little more, but I’m not sure if Wilson has the tank or interest to do it, and I’m not sure if asking a player to increase their running load at this stage of their career is helpful. Not everyone has to be a midfielder. If JLo sees value in keeping Wilson as an attacking halfback, smartarses like us say he should to be used in a more attacking way. If JLo tries to turn him into more of an attacking midfielder, smartarses like us ask why coaches need to turn everyone into a running machine, and Clive forbid he gets injured as a midfielder, because then everyone will blame the coach for overworking him.

I’m not convinced you can play S Hill and Wilson in the same backline, their kicking forward of centre would be useful, but at this stage of their career and recent injury history it might not be fair to ask them to play on the wing. Leaving either of them out if available is unthinkable.

Coaching. It’s hard.
