TOPIC: 16 minute quarters

I don’t trust the afl on this one. They are saying that this is a covid thing in case clubs need to play more than once a week, which makes sense. Gil is saying it will go back to 20 plus time on next year but I don’t know. I reckon the slightest hint that it went well and it will be made permanent.
I don’t know about others, but I want more footy, not less.

If channel eagle wants 20mins +time on,they will get it .
They will lose about 20mins over the normal 3 hrs plus reviews and after game coverage .,that's lot of commercials if people turn off earlier .

I share your concern Goodie. I think there will be a push from players and coaches to keep it at 16 mins beyond this year. Might be an outcome of collective bargaining negotiations, a trade off for players accepting pay cuts in 2021.

18 minute quarters next year, and more proof Gil can't be taken at his word. I have watched alot more footy this year because it was on nearly every night for a while there whereas the last five or so years I have really only watched Freo games. I know I am not alone in thinking this, but the game needs to be slowed down somehow. I am not sure how shortening the quarters does anything but the opposite. The lack of free flowing footy, the constant hugging of the boundaries, 36 players on the ball etc. has led to a pretty awful spectacle for so many games. I am with Morgan on this one. They need to introduce last touch out of bounds free kick, or reduce the amount of players on the field.

Every solution that involves more free kicks just makes the problem worse. Free flowing football means less free kicks.

Just get rid of the bag of footballs behind the goals. The ball gets softer and slows the game down, and the players can have a few seconds rest for a change.

It would be interesting to compare the amount of throw ins per game between now, and say, 30 years ago. I could probably find out but am too lazy. I am also aware I am getting older and probably romanticising the game somewhat. I watched a replay of the 86 state of origin game the other day on fox for the first time since the game (i was there as a kid that day) and I was stunned at the quality of the game. Fast moving, free flowing, highly skilled, and the kicking at goal was out of this world. It was over-officiated, and they paid marks that would never get paid today. It seems to me congestion in the current game is the single biggest issue that needs to be dealt with.

Because they weren't all buggered from the constant football. There were spaces to breathe and think.

Can you explain further? The lack of free kicks made for a more spread out game, and thus more room for decision making?

free flowing football is not just about umpiring. when you have 36 players at the contest and it resembles a rugby union rolling maul, you’re in trouble.

Not a fan of the 16 minute quarters, although I understand there are some who are. Where I could see 16 minute quarters working would be if most games move to night slots during the week, could have 540 starts and be done by 730. Might need shorter breaks eg 10min at half time.

Part of the reason I prefer longer games is it provides greater opportunities for teams to come back or to fall over. There is something great about watching a team come over the top when the other team has hit the wall.

Not to mention I like value for money, so if I'm paying $80 a week to rent a seat, I'd like to be getting more than 1 minute to the dollar.

There used to be more natural pauses in the game. There was a wait to get the ball back after a point, there was a casual meandering while the ruckmen caught up and the umpire got ready to bounce of the ball, you could take some time with a free kick rather than the umpire flapping his arms at you as soon as you looked up.

It's all go, go, go now.The players have to leave the ground just to catch their breath and they lose the flow of the game.

There were also less free kicks. Every contest is adjudicated like it's a judo tournament and the umpire has to award points. That's an unnatural pause, it's jarring to the flow of the game. The more rules you add, the more the game stops and restarts.

What you want is more uninterrupted passages of football, not more penalties.

Actually Fradonjan, I think both 7 and foxtel would love nothing more than shorter qtrs so that they can stuff more advertising into the same slot. Already seen it with extended time between goals, purely for advertising, in 2020.

In general i agree with you shane. So what's the answer? To me, the obvious ones are tiring the players out by dramatically reducing interchanges, increasing quarters, or possibly reducing the amount of players on the field. The last one would probably work best, but be the least palatable to purists.
