If they haven't got much hope then that's a problem they have to deal with. It's a tough situation but you can't just take and keep other people's money because you think you need it more.

The likelihood is that the season will be cancelled, but that hasn’t happened yet. Therefore, it’s premature to refund those who paid for their memberships upfront.

The club gives you the opportunity to select a rolling payment, but by suspending a scheduled payment the club would be giving unfair preference to those who used that payment method rather than those who paid upfront. You’d be better off dealing with it all in one go in the coming weeks once there is greater clarity about the status of the season.

It feels like an eternity, but the season was suspended 9 days ago. There is a fair bit that the administration has had to deal with in that 9 days, like standing down 75% of Freo’s staff (which makes dealing with other issues more difficult).

I reckon you should cut the club some slack. Besides, you heard Dale, people have been ringing the phone off the hook, and there’s no staff to deal with it. Poor bloke has probably been taking phone calls all day. I reckon if the players are still taking home 50% of their pay to not play football, they should at least man the phones a few hours a day.

He recorded a video asking for members to stick by the club and sent it out a few hours before the email reminder for the invoice payments went out. He didn't raise that issue. As if it was all a coincidence. There was plenty of opportunity there to mention they'd still be taking payments and to explain why that was happening. They chose not to mention it.

It was cynical and dishonest.

Even the local rec centre had the decency to cancel the automatic monthly direct debit because, quite simply, they're currently unable to provide the service everyone had signed up for.

Don't get me wrong, I love my club, but it's not the Salvos we're talking about here.

Im waiting for my call.

Im happy for them to keep the money if that will keep the club afloat bu I understand everyone's situation is different it will hopefully give me an opportunity to put in my 3 gripes.

i stop calling me a member I am a seat renter, under your constitution the only member is the WAFC, I have no voting rights I just rent a seat.

ii Im an inaugural seat renterr, once you offered a dinner for us if we paid $100 I went got pI55ed had a good night. Next year it was a brekky I went not as much fun. Year later it was a bloody high tea, I didnt go and nor did many others so it was canned. Bring something like the dinner back for us that have supported you for 26 years by renting a seat.

iii the seating system for the transition from Subi to Optus was abysmal, now with a new playing field next year can we have a better system..

You watch how efficient the system will be to elect for them to keep your money.

I’ll be wanting money back and I’ll be wanting to them make a decision as to whether I’ll rent a seat next year.
Players put their hands out for more money when they perceived the money was there through TV rights etc. I’m really interested in their stance now. A fair whack of cash to sit at home and lift weights. I’m guessing it’s to retain players who may go to other clubs (oh hang on), other sports (OHO) or into the general workforce and be lost to the game (OHO).
There are some pretty good part timers in the WAFL and local leagues that would put on a pretty good show for a lot less coin and some of them are currently registering with Centrelink.
I’m hoping that those that provide the revenue (and it’s the average person who rents a seat, buys a product or watches telly) is valued and everybody becomes a little more aware of their true value.
I’m not holding my breath though and I doubt I’ll be back at Optus. This loyalty card has been played too often for my liking.

I’ve been waiting, a little bit impatiently, and with increasing frustration, for the club - or AFL - to announce some form of compensation for members, or at least acknowledge that they are obliged to do something, but, instead, I get Dale telling me how marvellous I am and how the club values my support. That’s Dale-doublespeak for something like this:

“Thanks, we’ve got your money and we’re going to keep it because our players absolutely need to be paid a quarter million dollars a year to bugger about at home while everyone else (including non-playing staff) are relying on government handouts”

So, in plain language, my message to Dale Alcock and the rest of the AFL is bugger off, because I won’t be a member / seat renter anymore. You’re not worth my time or interest.

From the sound of this thread we are the only club doing it this way. Does anyone know what other clubs are offering members especially the likes of cashed up eagles. .

Every club is in the same boat.

Remember they promised to get back to members before round 2, so they've still got some time to respond.

I suggest that they're in a strong position legally to not refund the money, although buggered if I've read the small print so it's more of a hunch.

It's taken a once in a lifetime pandemic to make me realise the value of paying in installments instead of taking the next year for granted, I wonder how many will pay upfront next year?

It's simple - someone is selling you eleven apples, he's doesn't have any latitude to give you none. If he only gives you five and a half apples, half your money has to be returned too. That's law, when someone sells you something the responsibility is upon them to deliver.

I'm no Biz, but even I can do the maths. Eleven home games is eleven home games.

I think for many it boils down to a few pertinent things:

1) They've paid good money for a product that isn't being delivered
2) Many Australians are losing their employment or income stream in varying amounts and as such football club memberships are a luxury - even though with Freo we aren't more than seat renters !!!
3) While the players are not playing they are being paid a fairly significant portion of their large wages and have been paid fully already for quite a few months due to the way payments are structured.
4) The club in the last few years has treated members as spreadsheet numbers and replaceable 'assets' and has burnt a lot of goodwill with many members.
5) The AFL signed massive TV rights and sponsorship deals and still has no cash for this !!! Why was nothing put in a 'rainy day fund'.
6) My memory of the players bargaining agreement was that they would take a percentage of the TV rights/Revenues generated - well now those chickens have come home to roost and it seems that they aren't so keen on following that contract.

I find it ludicrous that all AFL clubs want to keep their membership fees if no product is delivered. While players are making hundreds of thousands of dollars even with the reduced pay. If they want to keep the clubs alive players and high paid staff (+$100k) should be the ones copping the cuts first and most severely, as most have already been paid around 5-6 months of their yearly salary I suggest no further pay till the games kick off and revenue generated. Only after these cost saving measures are in place should the members and fans be asked to share the load. Not sure there are any industries out there that are paying their employees 50% of their salaries while the produce nothing - The airlines don't appear to be!!

Funnily enough while some boards and executives of large companies are taking reduced or no salary going forward to at least share some of the pain (easy to do when you've raked in $$$ for the previous X years) with their employees and shareholders the pollies have been quite silent on this idea for their own salaries and entitlements.
