TOPIC: Midfield Concerns

Besides Fyfe and Walters our midfield is pretty average. Yes we are missing Mundy but surely he's at the end of his career and can't be expected to carry too much of a load anymore.
We really need our younger brigade to step up. We miss a Neale or Barlow type badly. All teams need an accumulator/distributor like him, as Shiel was today.
We just don't have it. You could take three of our younger midfielders in Brayshaw, Cerra and Crowden and their disposal tally wouldn't match one of these type of players.

It’s a role I’d thought Blakely looked likely to fill. I hope he can rediscover whatever it is he needs to make that position his own.
I thought we played too sociable in the middle, I’d also hoped that when the skipper got involved in a bit of push and shove with Stringer that the others would lift but it wasn’t noticeable.

A ball getter in the midfield was the main reason that got Blakely drafted. The entire of his junior footy had him in the middle.

Until Roly decided he was a half back.

We lacked depth in the midfield last year, then lost our two starting wingmen in the offseason. Brayshaw is a year away from being an elite midfielder, Cerra looks even further back.

Blakely’s serious hammy injury last year came at a time when he really should have been pushing to replace Neale. He’s 24, so if he doesn’t push into the middle this year it would be fair to wonder whether it will ever happen. It’s a shame because he looks to me to have the talent.

Blakely can read the ball off a ruckman and move well through traffic but his kicking is absolutely horrendous at the moment. He shanks too many of them but worse than that, he takes the wrong option when he kicks.

Given our disposal today, I'm not sure he helps the midfield unless we have other blokes in there he can give the ball to.

Getting Serong in there would be a better move from everything I've seen of the kid. He won't get as much of the ball just yet but he thinks through pressure situations well and disposes of the ball cleanly. He seems to have the body to handle AFL football too so I'd give him a go and be happy with 10-15 clean touches while he gains experience.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Brayshaw had a quiet game and Tucker made a lot of mistakes. Both are better players than they showed today and I’m sure there will be plenty of improvement with a bit of perseverance

How long has Tucker been there? 5-6 years? How much perseverance do you need?

Round 1 and Essendon looked like they were better conditioned than us. That will correct itself in the coming rounds.

Assuming the world is not a version of Comack Macarthy's The Road.

Blakely played one bad game in the pre season and the club decided that was enough to make him miss round 1. Having runs on the board at the elite level should have seen him picked ahead of Crowden, Colyer, Banfield, and a number of others that aren’t really good enough.

I like Crowden, he is a tough nut.

Yeah I like him too. He deserves a decent run at it for the first few rounds to see what he has. Ditto Logue, who was pretty terrible yesterday. I don’t think there are too many expectations on Longmuir and the club for the next couple of seasons. They will be looking to blood as many young players as they can.
A few of the mature age recruits are a problem. Banfield has gone backwards since his first season, and Bewley and Schulz appear not quite good enough.

Logue did what he should have done and got front position, double handed push in the back by forwards should not be rewarded with a shot on goal. And as for that blocking free, anyone who thinks Fisher and Stevic are impartial needs to rewatch that game.

For me, the most obvious midfield issue was the ruck when Darcy was in. Oddly enough ,I think he's lost abit of impact since trimming his 15 or so kegs. Yeah he's young, and ruckmen generally take longer to develop , but the midfield looked alot more coordinated and won more clearances with Lobb in. A fact J-Lo recognised as the game went on.

On Tucker, shouldve been traded 2 seasons ago back to Vic when he had currency. Couldnt hit the side of a barn then, and still cant. Gets run down abit in traffic too, so not great awareness.
Bring Serong in for someone. Whether its Banfield, Crowden or even Tucker.

Brayshaw's kicking into goal on run has been a defficiency from season 1, but hopefully its just between the ears. I can remember a player not unlike Andy...... Deboer, being very similar early on, but then became quite reliable running in. I think he can and will improve between the ears. Coz I like the lad, as an honest hard tackling inside mid with a great tank.

Clearly, early on, the key defenders were the big issue being outpositioned in every contest. Cox has always looks like he lacks urgency to me, and I always think hes gonna get run down when hes got it. At least the postponement will see that rectified whenever we next play.

In fact , throw Pearce, Hamling, Mundy, Wilson, Serong,Acres, and possibly Henry and our no.7 pick from last year, and round 2 lineup will be unrecognisable!
