Walters was leading goal kicker with 40, with acres, Serong, Bewley, Aish, Cerra, Connor and Andy all stepping up to play through the middle, Walters should be targeting 60 this year.

Walters will kick more goals playing in the guts, than he will as a small forward, because he will be harder to tag playing in the middle. Matera will kick more goals for Peel than he will for Freo this year.

Matera tailed off at the end of last season, but the first 2/3 of the season he was really useful. There might be a few explanations for his dip in form (team sucked, tall forwards were injured, ran out of legs), but based on his body of work last year I think he would start.

His forward pressure is pretty average but so long as you have a few others doing the chasing it’s fine. The challenge is Tabs and Lobb aren’t instilling much fear, neither is CamMac. I reckon there’s a role for Switkowski it Serong in our forward line for that reason.

I just hope we don’t see Brayshaw in the forward line this season. Watching him lining up for goal last season was painful.

Mattera kicked 30 last year with only ten small forwards ahead of him, one of which was Walters.
Some players who beat him were Dusty on 32 from 24 games. Stringer I’m saying he’s a bit bigger than a small forward 33 from 19. Degoey 34 from 17 although played as the full forward at times. Breust 34 from 22 games compared to Matera’s 20. Tipungwati 32 from 23 games. Ablett 34 from 24.
He equalled Liam Ryan 24 games and Cripps 19 games.
Based upon this I think his season was pretty solid particularly playing in a team that scored very little and didn’t play great.
I hope we have a small who is better but he has been more than serviceable and hard to be too critical IMO.
Before people jump in to say many of these players spent time in the middle, so did Matera. I thought it was bad coaching how often I saw Maters attend the centre square.

DBTS, Walters played as a midfielder, feeding opportunities to Matera, so Matera should have kicked more goals than Walters, given he was playing as a goalkicker. Even at this early stage I see the same faults in Materas game, always looking for the easy kick.

Walters fed the ball into all of the other players in the forward line also and yet they couldn’t manage to convert it into goals. Every other small forward in the comp has midfielders feed the ball into them, and yet Matera’s year stacks up against most of them.
Walters is an absolute jet if he was to spend more time forward he would at least as prolific as Charlie Cameron.
