I think it is likely that Hamling's dislocated ankle was reduced at the time of the injury. A dislocated ankle is not usually an isolated injury. There is typically associated trauma to ligaments, cartilage and bones. In addition there can be damage to blood vessels, nerves, and skin.
It sounds like the associated damage to the medial ligament was enough to justify surgery. Immediate surgery is warranted if it is necessary to reduce the dislocation or to reduce fractures. If it is only necessary to repair soft tissues, it is advantageous to wait for the initial swelling to resolve and a degree of tissue recovery to occur before attempting surgery. I think that is what has occurred on this occasion.
All being well, I am hoping for a 12 week recovery. I think any less will be a bonus.
