Interesting article on Lobb at:
Clickety thing

“I’m just building relationships with all of them. I had Leon for five years, Ross for one and now I’m building a relationship with JLo. They’re all really different in their own way but much the same in game plan” (My italics)

I don't think I can go another year with the same game plan.

The game plans wouldn’t be markedly different for all coaches, but adjusted to suit the players they’ve got. If you’ve got a strong midfield with good forwards you can obviously play a more attacking style and that’s likely what would happen.

There are game plans and PR....I guess our plan over the last five years merged with hype. Maybe this time we've just got a game plan!

I've been thinking about this great game plan where we kick a bigger score than the opposition. I think it has some merit.

I reckon you’re right ...

Like scoring is somehow an important factor for overall victory or something.

Can anyone actually point to some details of any teams ‘game plan’? Game plans seem to have taken on epic importance, with secrecy levels requiring espionage level security. Yet after years of teams referring to the importance of each team member understanding the team game plan it seems that the limited attention spans of most players plus the random nature of the game forces most coaches to stick to some fairly basic fundamentals. If they go beyond that they have a short life span because players can’t cope with complex plans when making split second decisions. I can understand how it works in comps like NFL where teams have the opportunity to set up for each play, but that doesn’t happen anywhere near the same amount of times in AFL (and even then we are talking about set plays not game plans)

Game plans give the expert commentators something to waffle about, coaches an excuse (the players did not stick to the game plan) and the chalk manufacturers their annual holiday.

Anything more complex than

"1)Get the ball, 2) Don't give it to a bloke a different shirt, and 3) You - or someone in the same shirt - should try & kick it though those 2 big sticks"

....ought not be considered!!

It is not rocket science, and the blokes playing are - generally - not rocket scientists....!

First you add lots of buzz words, then you have to employ lots of experts who know how to use them, so that you can't understand that the game is extremely complex. But, if you'd been watching the last 30 years or so, is still fairly simple - pedantic, ever-changing rules notwithstanding.

If you want people to talk about the game so people can understand, you might realise teams only need one coach and an assistant, which might make communicating with the squad somewhat simpler.

But that would make too many heads explode and the Dermot Breretons and David Kings would finally have to get a real job.

Richmond have a great game plan - know where your teammate is, get it on to him really quickly, and make sure that your chain of teammates is longer than your opponents' chain of players. That way you end up with the ball in the clear.

The year the Bullies won, their strategy was that when the opposition was doing the "get it to the next bloke in the chain" business, you always had someone there, so that they never reached the point of having a bloke with the ball going clear.

And the other great part of the game plan is to have quite a few 25 to 30-year-olds who have a better than 50/50 chance of winning the disputed ball.

Many many moons ago,i sent afax , there was not much of another way to contact people, straight away .and i was driving a truck at the time ,and used a (as i was on the road at the time ),clients fax machine ,
anyway i was listening to 6pr sports show cannot remember who was host.
But Ben Allan was giving his thoughts on why we had lost the game ,and a few callers had posed the same questions about game plans .
My fax got read out on air ,i was surprised ,but anyway Ben said all coaches come in with their "game style ",which he thinks will win the game, and he adjusts it as the game progresses.
He said there is no steadfast set game plan,as mentioned here before , (They’re all really different in their own way but much the same in game plan)
So not much has changed i think since then .
