You're talking about kids fondling each other, but I'm the one whose lost my brain? But yes, the John Howard line is a stupid one and points to a lazy "us and them" argument which I don't believe exists. If you believe it does, then good for you, but it gets boring when every issue is contrived into some sort of social justice or political argument.

Spud, I think The West called it "groin taps" but it's not like Shane is making stuff up. The culture in some of these schools probably explains a few things about AFL club culture.

Sometimes when people discuss things on the internet, they'll throw in a joke or a quip that is tangent to the crux of the argument. You've focused on those and then drawn wild conclusions about the people commenting, instead of taking into account the overall point being made. I know for a fact that hypen campaigned for Doug Shave in the 1996 election*.

Grub, those students at the elite schools are not accessing superior coaches etc, they are accessing superior selectors.

As for the whole elite schools argument, take a look at age level rugby in NZ, where young players from remote schools, and the Polynesian islands are offered huge bribes sorry scholarships to go to the various *Boys High School, but do not end up with a rounded education, and when they do go off the rails after leaving school, are a protected species, looked after by the rugby establishment. (sound familiar) Take a look at the history of Sevu Reece, the latest "wunderkid" of NZ rugby.

Yeah RM, I'm not sure I'd be aspiring to follow anything from NZ rugby just quietly.

I've been following this at a distance and in my view, some schools do choose particular students who have particular talents. Schools like Churchlands gather in students for their music program, gifted and talented program and the like.

One significant difference is that these programs are additional to the normal school requirements and the students have to maintain a high standard both in school and in their program to remain. So the kids to get an education as well as being exposed to a good culture that promotes excellence.

They don't take money under the guise of delivering a Catholic education and then produce ignorant footballers. There are two ways of doing these things and the right way produces good results

Where I grew up there were no private schools - there were two public funded systems, protestant and Catholic. You went to the nearest school. Period. And it didn't matter if you were one or the other, everyone was universally covered for medical and dental for life.

Why make distinctions, they're unnecessary and complicate your basic social base - and by extension, your economic and cultural one as well. Sorry, this country has it wrong trying to cut both ways.

polly, it’s just not that simple as to be so black and white, or that one way is right and the other wrong.

the system is what the system has been for a very long time here and ain’t so easy to change without causing a lot of pain that would lead to mass voter wrath.

Meritocracy folks. That's all it is. Doug Shave knew it too.

Yes, big voter backlash for sure - thats why most reasonable hard working and thoughtful people freaked and put ScoMo and his band of Hallelujah Heros on everyone for another four years.

But where I came from a talented kid from a dirt poor farm north of the big smoke could take a professional sport for a ride it's never experienced before, or since for that matter. He never even completed his high school - check out Wayne Gretzky's life story.

It's one of the saddest things about footy here - for every superkid out of Midvale, Tambellup, Kojonup or Lake Grace there's a dozen well groomed middle of the road dopes that strut their striped ties down the Terrace. For every one of them there's a hundred talented footballers falling away by the time they're 16. The way of harnessing them into the sport, into this imperfect society, is left to the Clontarf mob - not the Soviet styled multimillion dollar WAFC.

The kid that sleeps with his footy is the kid you want to draft. Just my view.

talent, passion, opportunity.

two of those are innate, the third, we can bestow on people. but greedy bastards keep it for themselves; sometimes subconsciously, sometimes not.

Yeti, I agree with you, the same things we see as wrong in the system of AFL are happening in NZ rugby, destroying Fiji and the Pacific islands teams, (along with what Northern Hemisphere clubs are doing), and we see more & more examples of young players going off the rails because of an elitist culture at school First Fifteen reps level, then being protected from punishment by the Rugby establishment. Sound familiar? While the young fellas from the other side of the tracks are thrown to the wolves if they do something wrong. Sound familiar?

By the way, keep an eye on Dave Rennie, he is one of the great coaches of any sport, and will prove that over the next 4 years. He believes you have to be a good person to really be a good sportsman, and treats his teams accordingly.

The Wayne Gretzky story is one of the great tales in sport and in life, but I went right off him in the late 90's when I found out he'd been in Australia campaigning for Doug Shave
