We have 49 & 58, it's a big assumption to say we will trade them, and as big an assumption that Henry will cost us those picks.

Rumours are that Carlton would have bid for Henry at pick 9, so we would have had to use 10 to get him. Now we should get two picks (7 & 8) before a bid comes for Henry. So two top 10’s and Henry would be a good outcome.
Fingers crossed it plays out this way.

These academy picks really throw a spanner in the works Nothing to stop Gold Coast putting a bid in for Green at 2 and completely stuffing GWS. Or Sydney bidding for Henry at 5 Crazy stuff

Just listened Liam Pickering on trade radio podcast. His assessment of next year draft was very ordinary and to his mind at this point far inferior to this years.
I can’t see too many clubs banging the door down to get next years picks off us.
If Carlton were to make us use pick 10 to get Henry that would’ve sucked.
It looks like we might miss out on Jackson who I had as my most wanted. At least he is going to play in front of crowds of 15 people, hopefully we can get him back.
We really needed St Kilda’s pick 6. It’s a shame we couldn’t do better on the Langdon deal.
Who knows, maybe there is a master plan and we did a sweetheart deal with Melbourne and this is the second stage.
What’s their pick 3 worth

I hope part of the trade was an assurance from Melbourne that they would bid on Green with pick 3 then not select Jackson with their pick should gws match the bid, then we might have a chance to land him, unless of course our actual targets are Flanders and Ash which fits in more with our “skinny white Vic mid” draft priority shown in recent drafts.

JLO has said he wants outside run so I’m guessing will be after Lachie Ash, Dylan Stephens, Hayden Young if he gets through.. Some of those types.. Can’t see us going for Deven Robertson.

Don’t we have multiple second round picks next year? Can’t we just trade one of that to a club this year for a pick in the 30’s to pretty much satisfy the points needed for the Henry bid?

You are right RM....this is not much better than fantasy footy.....

All too confusing!!

Thankyou to the DL's thart do understand - and can handle- all this! Your insights are fantastic for dumbums like me.

But - I ask the question - nowadays, wheres the incentive for finishing near last, and being perennial non-performers???

Or is tanking why this points/trade-draft system was designed to fight against....?

The old system of "matching bids" just meant using your next available bid.

So, if in today's draft GC took Richmond's academy kid at pick 1, the Tigers only had to offer pick 19 to secure that player. Clearly unfair. Hence, some complex modelling done (based on player salaries) to nominally value draft picks, to try to create a fairer bid system.

Once you have a points value system, trading picks seems to naturally follow.

I understand people don't trust the draft but it's become far more scientific and is heading towards a much more certain outcome than the 'gamble' a lot of people like to claim it is. The data and information collected on the kids which is refined each year as each draft crop become the stars of the competition, provides a much clearer picture of a players ability to perform at AFL level over time. It's proven each draft as the top picks perform stronger and stronger.

As for next year's draft, it's not rubbish, it's compromised. The live picks or talent available to everyone is not as good as this year because most of the top talent is attached to academies and father sons. That is true for us with Western and Brandon Walker likely high picks who have done great things over this year and performed well. They will have all the help of our academy to push on next year and perform similarly to how Henry has.

I wouldn't be sacrificing either of them for a pick this year and I doubt too many clubs would be keen for that trade unless they also have multiple bids needing to be matched next year.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I know there's a lag and I know they've gotten better but the results don't indicate that they're anything close to being precise at identifying the players who will make it and the players who won't make it.

The most important statistic in football is the score. The most important data in drafting is how well the players you pick go in their football career.
