Bit more like poker now and reading the table (who will bid on who when), and knowing when to move on trading picks.

Analysis stating GWS moving to 4 is bad for us is 100% correct.

If we were confident that noise re bid for Henry comes before our pick 10 (which at best will now be 11th player named in draft unless Melbs bid on Green at 3) we absolutely should pick split if a deal was there.

Means you get 7 ... and Henry with matched points ... and an extra pick in teens or 20s, and our 22 for Taylor, Rivers, or Sharp or a non WA lad.

Poker is nice but the game here is to pick the best players not get the best picks.

First rule of football. Keep your eye on the ball.

[nods head in appreciation]

True Shane ...

Think I’m locked in on Henry but wonder if they’re contemplating not matching a bit if it came too early on how they’d ranked this year’s crop of players.

all sounds very Richmond to me click for reference
"Our Strong and Bold strategic plan is underpinned by five strategic priorities:
Win one or more premierships
Establish a powerful organisational culture
Develop a better understanding of our supporters
Increase revenue to ensure sustainability and success
Continually develop our facilities and infrastructure"
Not sure if the FFC has locked itself into an actual vision. Committing to playing high quality and entertaining football with the aim of winning a premiership would be an start.

Going back to the Jeff Goldblum sneakers show, they're all in a dopamine frenzy at the moment from the anticipation and not thinking straight. If a club has set their mind on a player, they'll pay overs.

The draft room has a lot in common with a casino floor in that respect. So it probably is a lot like poker.

Freo needs to go retro here, and use the Troy Cook maneuver, noone will get in the way of that.

Hawks are getting into the action now... Hawks complete pick swap that could unlock potential draft windfall

"The Hawks gave up pick No.30 as part of the deal with the Kangaroos, receiving picks No.50, 73 and a future second-round selection in return."

not sure why there is so much consternation here on DL over pick swaps?

i) the AFL have assigned a value to picks with the points system
ii) clubs have a set of needs and want going into a draft, map out possible scenarios and consider how their picks stack up against that
iii) pick swaps can help the clubs get more comfort that they may actually get their needs and wants in the draft

this is a classic market place working exactly how it should. No one is outsmarting or outmaneuvering anyone; they are just doing their jobs. It's not a great spectator sport but that's not the point of it.

My issue then is that the points are nonsense and the clubs have never demonstrated any understanding of what they need. Every time a department grows and people are hired, it costs money.

That money comes from us in the form of higher ticket prices, more expensive food and clothing, more blinding and deafening advertising at games and less money for grass roots football to make the next generation of footballers better and more entertaining.

It's expenditure without an improvement in productivity. It's a waste of resources.

Shane, I get the general gripe about bloat in departments, but cannot see how you draw the link to the allocation of points values to draft picks as a cause of that waste, nor how you can say the points are a nonsense.

It’s high school maths required here for a very simple and efficient market, not a PhD in economics.

I think Shane may be referring to the fact that another 4 or 5 accountants get hired to set up the "Draft Picks Points Counting Dept", on top $$$'s who then hire about 30 ex bank tellers ( made redundant by bank branch closures) to do the actual work of counting & tallying. Not sure what they all do from December through to October.

The points are nonsense because the implication is that the industry understands the value of the market. They don't. They're guessing at potential using flawed modelling.

It's all based on false assumptions.

I've read on the grapevine that Melbourne's #8 is up for grabs.

Here's a question. If Carlton pick Henry at pick 9, I would imagine we would match that pick with pick 10.
As pick 9 = 1469, but we get a 20% discount which should mean we only need 1175
We use pick 10 = 1395 (-1175) = 220 left over.
Then, does this mean those 220 are added to our next pick 22 (845) to be 1065 points equivalent to pick 16 (1067).
Therefore, we'll end up with another first round pick if Henry is nabbed at pick 9.
Is that how the points will flow?
