Not true gumnut - If Green is bidded on after their pick 4 - GWS will have 2 picks (academy) and basically lose all of this and next years picks.
Our only hope is that Melb bid on Green at pick 3 otherwise our pick 7 becomes 8 and 10 becomes 11.
Terrible result for the comp really with the Giants effectively gaining 2 Top 4 picks.
I would say Jackson is gone now..

I'm pretty sure you're wrong there Demo. GWS only have 1 top 10 pick and that is pick 4. Their next pick is pick 40 so I don't know where you're getting the other first rounder from. They had pick 6 but they gave that to Adelaide in exchange for pick 4. The only benefit they've got is taking Adelaide and Sydney out of the Tom Green equation and given them more chance of getting Jackson but If Melbourne put in a bid for Green then it's all been for nothing. It could be the same for us with Henry if a bid doesn't come for him inside the top 10. We could match a bid for him at pick 11 and then we would have 3 picks in top 11. That's just the rub of the green and we just have to deal with it the best we can.
Next year with all our academy and father/son picks we will be doing the same thing and no one here will be whingeing about it.

I get the impression clubs are spending more time trying to game the draft system than assessing the competencies of prospective players.

No Gumnut - you are wrong. Your not thinking fourth dimensionally..
Its the whole reason GWS have done it to secure 2 Top 5 picks instead of just matching a bid for Green.
GWS are too smart and Adel have taken the extra draft points and bugger the rest of us.
This is what will happen.

1 - GC - Rowell
2. GC - Anderson
3. Melb - Young
4. GWS - Jackson
5 Syd/GWS - Bid on Green - GWS match with picks 40,59,60 - next years first is gone, so next years 2nd & rd rounder to make up the required draft pick index points)
6 Syd - Flanders (hopefully not Robertson)
7. Adel - Stephens (who they might have taken at 4 anyway)
8. Freo - Robertson/Ash
9.
10.
11. Freo - Hoping Henry is still there so we can choose a future star then get Henry a bit later by forfeiting pick 22

This is where the AFL are getting a bit crazy.
GWS by matching the bid at 5 from Sydney have to pay approx 1500 draft points.
They only have about 750 in this draft with picks 40,59,60.
So they have to go in draft deficit next year by approx 750 points.
Given they have no first round pick (traded to Adel) it will wipe them out.

That shouldnt be allowed IMO.
Next years draft is light on for talent with all the academy picks.
GWS get 2 guns this year in a season where they made the GF.

I can see your point there Demo but are you sure they they can go into deficit next year to make up points? I didn't think they could do that since they've already traded away next year's first round pick.
Cal Twomey's AFL site recent post regarding Hawthorn's efforts to trade seems to cover similar territory with a statement from AFL that ünder AFL rules, to trade out a future first round selection it must retain it's other picks in that draft".
Surely this should also apply to GWS that after having traded away their next years first round pick this should preclude them from surrendering 2020 picks to make up points on 2019 draft. To do this they would contradict the very thing that Hawthorn are trying to do and that is trade away 2020 picks in addition to their first rounder.

Wake me up after the draft then we can discuss all the merits of the draft pick swapping.

In light of both demo's and my recent posts I think the AFL are making this up as they go along especially they've recently outlawed Sydney and the Weagles shenanigans from last year that we were looking at repeating this year to ensure we pick up Henry.

Its the only reason why they would throw away so many draft points...
Yes they can go into deficit. Whether or not you should be allowed to go into deficit that much when already trading away your next years first rounder is a debate sure to had after the draft.
I agree they shouldnt be allowed to and would love to see this overturned as the clubs are continuing to make the AFL look like amateurs.
Hawks problem is a different one due to always trading away their first pick getting in the likes of Mitchell, O'Meara, Wingard etc

1. GWS are the AFLs love child - Im sure if it was Freo it would already be outlawed.
2. The scary bit is they must be 100% assured that Melbourne wont take Green at pick 3 (Draft Tampering??)

No doubt they'll bring in some ruling to stop us getting our hands on numerous Academy and father/son picks next year as there is a lot of whingeing going on in the Melbourne media about next years Draft being compromised by the number of Top chances who are already aligned to various clubs outside of Victoria.

A bit like the way some coaches spend all their time trying to out manoeuvre the other team instead of training the players to become better at football, hypen?

A lot of them are just playing their own game instead of working at their job.

The 'filmmaking' here consists of making sure the camera is pointed at people who are explaining the film's plot to one another, preferably while they are wearing logos and standing in front of more logos.

Sounds like the nailed the accuracy.

All this is well and good unless Melbourne use the Inverse Heimlich Strategy on the day and mess things up for GWS, but they could counter with the Sheedy Counter Defensive which then will mean Carlton with have to use the Kapersky method to retain their spot in the draft. this will be a very controversial move by carlton is the Kapersky is quite unstable and was last used by the Chicago Redwings in the 1994 NHL draft to disastrous consequences.

Personally I want to see Melbourne instead use the Barassi Alignment Strategy this may stymie GWs but assist others if they employ the Chocko Williams Gambit or Roos open pawn sacrifice counter.
