whether or not you put it down to Bell, this article from the ABC has the data putting us well ahead on this trade period

I didn't intend to be overly negative, I'd prefer to bring some perspective to the idea that Bell is doing an amazing job. I think he was about even last year and probably similar this year.

If people want to fantasize as if what he has done was unachievable rather than expected, that's their point of view. He was about a C+ for this trade period and I would hope he improves over time. It is all subjective until 10yrs from now when we can accurately measure the outcome of trades but on initial viewing, I think we could have done better.

Most of that rating this year comes down to only getting pick 22 out of Melbourne (or any other club for that matter) for Langdon which is well below where he should be valued. I still don't know why we caved on that deal and I have no doubt we'll hear commentators mention former Fremantle docker Ed Langdon for years to come.

If the recruiting team do well in the draft, everyone will forget the trade deals that got us those picks. I just wish we had more picks and opportunities in the draft.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Good article Jezzaargh, highlights what Biz was saying in that Langdon is rated second behind only Kelly in the PAV rating and that we virtually gave him away. But it also shows we were the biggest mover in this years draft which surprised me.

The fact that we risked losing Langdon for nothing has played a big part in Melbourne getting him cheap, we had a win a couple of years ago with Hill, getting him for around the same price. We also had a big win with the Weller deal, and you can't expect that every year.

Biz may well be knowledgable but you guys keep overlooking the fact that Langdon could have gone for nothing. Again, Melbourne had pick two in the preseason draft. You guys keep failing to acknowledge that. I assume the argument is "why didn't we trade him to someone else?". Well, maybe because he can't hit the side of a barn with his favoured foot and therefore no-one else wanted him. Yes he racks up the stats, mostly from having to retrieve the ball he just turned over in the preceeeding passage of play. Only to then turn it over again. I don't want big stats if it's because you keep kicking it back to the opposition.

As for Lobbe and Hogan. They are two proven players. Biz might know some stats about some kid running around in the colts who may or not be better in the long term than Lobbe and Hogan. Maybe. But Lobbe and Hogan have runs on the board, and I said earlier, Freo fans has been crying out for KPF's for at least the last 15 years. Bell got them or at the very least helped a lot to make it happen.

This isn't meant to be a "Peter Bell is the Freo messiah" post. I don't think he's done anything necessarily amazing, but he also hasn't ballsed anything up either, and that's rare air at Freo. It's more just to point out that no matter what he does, or what anybody at Freo does (except of course for Mark Harvey who is the true messiah), some of you guys are determined to be unhappy.

Yep, the fact that he has not stuffed up big time, mostly because he has not been panicked, (by the media), into doing dumb deals, puts him at the forefront as far as our list admin staff over the last 25 years goes. As said in an earlier post, Bell, along with Neesham, and in my opinion, Smart, are the most influential Freo figures in our short history.

ps There is a case for having Rick Hart in that list as well.

I don't see Langdon leaving for nothing as ever being a realistic possibility. Remember when Bond used that as leverage to get Mitch Clark, and Clark freaked out and went with a safer option.

It's easy for a football manager to talk about running the pre-season draft gauntlet but it's a different thing for the player who's actually taking the risk. It's also a terrible way for a football club to do business with their limited pool of trading partners.

But obviously if we were Melbourne we would have tried it.

(and failed, and everyone would have called it a win)

There are many myths that simply don't hold in footy - here's one of the best (or worst, depending on your perspective):

MYTH:
Key position big forwards take longer to develop than other footy players.
COUNTER FACT:
Buddy Franklin kicked 113 goals from 25 games in his fourth season at the age of 21.

The Peter Bell myth would go like this:

MYTH:
Peter Bell is an uncompromising and smart footy trader that works the mechanics of the football trading period like the best poker player you'll ever meet.
COUNTER FACT:
Peter Bell is an uppity arseclown that only thinks he can fleece your team in footy deals.

The Peter Bell myth holds for me - I can't say the same for many of the hopeless big forward wannabes strutting around in the game.
