I saw a headline today that Bell is open to swapping future picks to enable earlier picks this year.

What is the process for this? Is there another trade period based solely on draft position?

I believe clubs can trade picks up until 22 November, a couple of days before the draft.

you can no longer trade players but you can trade picks pretty well up to the draft. You can also make last minute trades on draft day to accommodate what you want to do.

So theoretically if a bid for Henry comes before our pick 10, we can go and trade pick 10 (and maybe 22) with another club like Port Adelaide for 12 and 18 so that we only have to use pick 12 to match the bid and retain pick 18. otherwise we waste pick 10 and possibly points from pick 22 that might drop the value of that pick to 28.

You can also trade future picks as part of that but I would still be banking points for our kids available next year. The draft is good but compromised. luckily for us, it's compromised in our favour given our academy kids.

The only problem with trading future picks is that it weakens our hand when trying to pick up the Academy and Father/son recruits we want to get in next years draft. I hope Belly gets it right.

I think you get 2min to decide to match a bid but then the clock stops so you can wheel and deal. I'm not 100% though as the rules can be a bit open to interpretation at the best of times. I'm sure our recruiting team will discuss potential trades in this scenario well before it pops up so they can enact it straight away.

I still live in hope the bid will be after our first pick but Melbourne at pick 8 are a worry.
