Adelaide have appointed Matthew Nicks as their coach so it looks almost everyone went for younger assistant coaches. It's not that surprising that there wasn't much interest in the experienced senior coaches around but I thought someone might try something different, or at least go as far as Brisbane went appointing Chris Fagan.

They've picked up on the fact that its a people based industry and organisational factors are even more important than talent of your footballers. The mistake is thinking youngish people are better equipped to deliver on this.

This is isnt a new thing, historically we just havent done it well and Fremantle were the worst of all.

Fagan is an example of what you need, so is Simpson. There would be a 15 year age gap between the two.

I guess the Saints did with Rattan but for most there is less risk (members, sponsors) with an untried young coach. You get a honeymoon period at least.
Voss won’t get another gig unless Hinkley is sacked and the likes of Scott Burns, Jade Rawlings etc seem unlikely to get a run unless their boss is sacked.
If you are an Ass Coach looking for a senior gig then get to a club where the senior coach is likely to get the lemon and take your chances.

That's true, hypen, but they all went for a Simpson. Nobody seemed to approach the recruitment differently from anyone else. I know the Saints took Ratten but they did it almost in spite of his experience as a senior coach.

I'm assuming not all of the new coaches will make a go of it so it would have been interesting to see a few different approaches and see how it all played out.

Go on then.

They essentially just took a good young assistant coach, like the rest of them.

I was thinking more someone rethinking the structure of the football department, or taking someone with experience outside of football or a return to captain coach. Stuff like that.

Too risky Shane. Brisbane had nothing to lose and they got a good bloke with contacts like Hodge.
Imagine if Freo appointed someone like, I dunno, Ric Charlesworth, out of left field. This board would melt down.
As for North Melbourvne, they appointed and untried coach on the back of a few wins as caretaker and if you believe the press (yeah I know) very little consideration to other candidates. On paper there would be a line up of more qualified and experienced coaches and Ass coaches.
They may have got it right but only time will tell.
