Yes cletus, I think it's always been a possibility but the logistics of that happening would be very difficult to achieve.

Now King has re-signed we can turn the screws and force a massive deal with the Saints.

Maybe Geelong are returning the favor by offering up 14,17 and Menegola as a thank you for raising the price they got for Kelly.

14,17 and Menegola I would take that in a flash.

Is there an etiquette that freo should try and get it to work with St Kilda?

DD what etiquette would you be talking about. If there was any St Kilda walked away from that the other day after reportedly a three minute meeting.
I love these whispers circulated but not “confirmed”, that Bell changed what we were expecting. Everybody knows the value of players varies every year, dependant on clubs needs, and talent available.

Simon Lethlan is a AFL Plant and was hoping Freo would panic into taking pick 6 alone when he gave Belly a deadline of 11am Thursday.
In the end they split that pick with GWS which of course Freo could have done with pick 7 anyway..
Belly has stuck fast as usual and it would be hilarious if another club pounces and Saints miss out..
Lethlean is a battler trying to make it in club land after a aborted AFL mission.
Why does Hilly want Saints anyway?/ Geel or Hawks wpuld be a much better fit for him..

I don't see where we have this leverage over St Kilda that gives some this confidence we're in the box seat.

Worst case for us is we keep Hill and lose him in two years for less.

Worst case for St Kilda, they carry on as if they never met us.

The leverage is in the fact that they've made a huge offer to a player they obviously value extremely highly and likely made all sorts of commitments to said player, but the trade falls over because they stupidly don't offer up reasonable picks.

So what happens the next time they make such an offer to another player? Grain of salt comes to mind.

I don’t think keeping him is worst case. I think this is a positive outcome. The only way us losing him becomes a positive, is if we can turn him into multiple swings at the top of this draft.
Kelly didn’t get done last year and increased his value with a better year. There is no reason Hill can’t do the same, he will have to if he wants to be offered 900k again. Hill will still be in contract next year.
I fail to distinguish the difference to our position on Hill to Essendon’s position on Daniher.
Essendon have built their list around challenging now, with few tall forward options available to fill Daniher’s role, this position is seriously compromised.
If we lose Hill, we will have lost two of our top five, this accompanied with injury issues around a number of other important players leaves us very unsure of our list capabilities. Should Hill join Langdon in departing we are acknowledging that we are taking a step back. If this is the case we need access to the top WA talent, Jackson being one of these.
If some rumours are to be believed, GWS are interested in Jackson. St Kilda has effectively traded away our main reason for being interested in a trade.

3 days left, a 100 deals left to be done and another few hundred thousand imagined by the media.

It's almost as exciting as the Brownlow count.

Geelong are apparently keen on Hill.

But Geelong is a fair old drive down the highway from Melbourne so would Hill actually be keen? If he wants to be in Melbourne because his girlfriend lives there would they want to move to Geelong? It would be the equivalent of a player wanting to move to Perth but consider a move to Bunbury instead.

Its down the bloody road KingKeplar. Nothing like Bunbury. You'd be closer to Tasmania.

One of the reasons I thought Geelong was willing to move on Kelly was salary cap. If this is the case they wouldn’t be able to match St Kilda’s offer to Hill.
Could they be repaying us for our ongoing interest in Kelly providing leverage.
Perhaps we aren’t the issue in negotiations as reported by east coast media. Maybe they’ve had enough of St Kilda in their attempt to get Stevens.

There seems to be some sort of mindset that because Hill has asked for a trade the Dockers have to do it. He’s a contracted player and should be kept unless an exceptional offer is made. Hill’s personal circumstances hardly compare with Kelly’s.

Clubs like St Kilda should not be encouraged to unsettle contracted players with backdoor OTT offers. Anyway, St Kilda appears to have realised that they have offered to much for Hill (salary and picks) and have deliberately dealt themselves out of the deal by trading away pick 6. It will be very disappointing if the Dockers now accept a pick in the teens topped up by a middle of the road player like Menegola .

The Dockers should keep Hill, perhaps offer him a pay rise. He’ll still be worth plenty in two years (look how much Geelong was able get for an uncontracted player) and, who knows, he may have settled down and be happy to stay.
