I’ve just finished watching a short doco on the Icelandic soccer team. With a population of just over 300k they worked their way up to the top 25 soccer countries in the world. One of their key strategies was to engage with their fans in an authentic and close relationship. As examples they developed the Viking Thunderclap (look it up - awesome) and the coach announces the team list directly to fans in small pubs before it is released by the media. It reminded me of the rock and anchor and watching the club training in Freo. Sadly things of the passed. I hope some of our Board actually start to think about reconnecting in a way that is genuine rather than market driven. Let’s get back to what defined us as a club of passionate supporters. There was a reason that JLo dived into the crowd when he kicked his goal after the siren - it was because we mattered to the players and we were part of the team. I believe that connection has been broken after many years of being taken for granted. I hope it comes back before I leave this mortal coil.

Great post. Klopp with Liverpool is another example. They’ve always been known for having passionate supporters but he has really embraced it and transformed that club.

We really are amateurs compared to the NFL and NHL. The Dropkick Murphy's are revered in Boston.

Would love us to bring back the rock and play and do something "different" than the rest of the AFL teams. If only the fans had a real say in our club.

The AFL have been trying to do this stuff for ages, clubs as well. What do you get? A bloke on a roof with a guitar and fireworks that take players out before the game.

I've got an idea. Why don't we just have silence between quarters. Discuss the way the game is progressing, and engage with our neighbouring fellow seat holders. Maybe, at each home game we could have some of our former players introduced to the crowd and driven around the oval in the back of an HQ ute. Anything except the incessant gibbering of some egotistical knob trying to insincerely foster enthusiasm for some totally irrelevant and disinteresting event occurring somewhere on the ground.
