TOPIC: Draft Focus

I'll answer my own question above.
I'd take players who have not been influenced by any other coach or club culture. Otherwise I'd take players on the draft rankings list (U18 top 30). Here's the order of players with emphasis on West Aussies. I show their current rankings.
Luke Jackson (11)
Liam Henry (12)
Deven Robertson (15) - Larke medal
Jeremy Sharp (30)
Elijah Taylor (25)
Dylan Stephens, SA lad (10) - SA captain
This order is my preference. We might get the first two. Sharp and Taylor will be within our reach. Stephens is worth consideration early.

Problem is, if we take 6&7 to the draft and someone bids on Henry at say 12 we’ll have to use pick 22 & most of pick 26 to match the Henry bid. What’s left of 26 will end up being in the 40s or 50s. I’d like to flip at least one of 6 or 7 for a pick in the teams and twenty’s if possible, then we can use the one in the teens to match a bid for Henry and have 3 picks in the twenties to pick up wa lads.

Ps not fussed if we miss Deven as he’s probably a slimmer through and through given his uncle is Glass.

GWS hold pick 12 and 18.....Hawks 11 and 30 ....Gold Coast 15 and 20......would they be interested in our 6 or 7 pick ?

Our picks aren’t worth that much, GWS will almost certainly trade their two with Melbourne for pick 3 as they want another top player before a bid on their academy player which is tipped to come at 4 or 5, Gold Coast will be trading 15 & 20 for mature players they are trying to bring in. More likely is Brisbane who have 16 & 21 or bulldogs who have 13 & 31, but it relies on one of them really wanting someone who’s going to go in the top 7 picks.

Edit: if the Melbourne GWS trade goes ahead, I’d be pushing for 18 for Langdon.

Getting back to my original post i think the fact that we can only find defences for three of them backs up my argument.

Darcy definitely fits into my original description of potential and we know that ruckmen take longer to develop. There is also no denying that his tap work is very good. But there's also no denying that he struggles badly to take many marks or get many disposals. He is also often injured which has perhaps led to his inability to run out games.

Brayshaw does come across as a level head top young bloke who is a big chance of being a future captain. Does being a captain though necessarily make you a great player? I don't think so myself. eg. Nathan Jones has been captain of Melbourne for a long time and played hundreds of games, so has Trent Cotchin. Ben Stratton, David Swallow, Jarryd Geary- all captains and solid players but no stars.

Cerra. I keep hearing how he could be the next Simon Black. Yeah, could be and could be not. We've not seen anything yet to suggest it.

I think there are plenty of players from the drafts that have done more than our picks. My hope is that Longmuir will back these guys in, let them take risks, show their natural flair and talent and then Brayshaw could become like Lachie Neale, Cerra could become like Black and Darcy could become like Gawn, because the way they have been progressing under Lyon it's not happening.

I'm excited about the upcoming draft because we have the chance to grab some great young exciting talent thanks to our next generation academy, early picks and W.A.'s winning U/18 team. Future stars with that x factor ability to win games off their own boot. Our recruiters haven't done that in a long time so here's hoping they don't stuff it up by drafting more list cloggers, rejects or underwhelming kids just because they're Victorian.

The thing I respect about you CA is you always give the kids sufficient time to prove themselves prior to judgement. At least three quarters.

Nah Hypen, I have respect for youngsters and really hope as I've said that they get the chance next year to show their true colours, something that players like

Walsh, Rankine, Thomas, Rozee, Blakey

Stephenson, Allen, Rayner, Daniels, Ryan

Taranto, McLuggage, Petrevski-Seton, McGrath, Berry, Marshall, Bolton

who were taken in the same three drafts as the players I've mentioned have.

I don't know why I need to convince you because I thought you of all people would have understood how restrictive Lyon's game plan, positioning and expectations were, but apparently not. If you think I want them to be duds, so be it , but you're wrong.

Next year is their chance to show what they're really like. A new coach who has said there will be a new style, which will hopefully bring the best out in them so that do fulfill their potential and match what others have already shown.

You’re maybe underselling Cotchin a little, CA. He did win a Brownlow.

I like your list Polly, all with plenty of upside, especially Sydney Stack but I think their all pretty untouchable at the moment. The one I'd really like is Shai Bolton and he was a Freo supporter as well. As mentioned elsewhere on this site we have quite a few Next Gen Academy players coming up next year plus Kobe Farmer so we may trade in some 2020 picks to assist as listening to the pundits next years draft is shallow and all the talent is in Academy players and father/son picks.
