TOPIC: Draft Focus

Right, now that we've seen off the Kelly trade I agree that we need to focus on the young talent available, particularly from our U/18 winning team.
I really hope the recruiters are up to the task though as our recent past history hasn't been that great.
2016-Logue, Darcy, Cox, Ryan.
2017-Brayshaw, Cerra, Dixon, Crowden, North, Meek, Switkowski, Jones
2018-Sturt, Valente, Schultz, Bewley

When you look at that list the only genuine very good player is Ryan. I'm always hopeful when you draft someone that words like exciting, star or dominator could be used when talking about them but realistically at this stage there are question marks, solid, potential(not shown yet in many cases) hard worker, often injured that would be more appropriate.

I am hopeful that some of these guys will blossom with a new game plan and coach because we certainly need them to.

I agree that the draft is the way to go, Kelly would be giving up too much for one player which we’ve had a reasonably unsuccessful history doing.
I think it will be the year that Brayshaw, Cerra, Blakely etc need to be put in the middle permanently. Shame to lose Hill and possibly Langdon (still not sure if this one is confirmed, rumour has it one will stay and one will go out of Blakely and Langdon).
I think the last few drafts have been ok, we should see that group develop over the next 12 months, the first 2 picks last year and North the year before were picked up with injuries.
Hopefully we get a bolter out of that group and someone in this draft that is ready to play.
Anyway I just hope we play an exciting style of footy and take the game on.

Ryan is 2 years older than most of that group (Logue, Darcy, Cox, Cerra, Brayshaw etc) of which quite a few have shown promise under a coach who supposedly wasn’t very good. Some hardly or haven’t even taken to the paddock...2020 is going to be an interesting year.

Draft the best we can and don’t go near any known problems, anti Freo Kelly types or blokes who’ll miss their Mums cooking.

I've come around to supporting using our draft picks on young players.
So let's assume our draft picks are:
6 (Hill), 7, 22 (Langdon), 26, 80 (have I missed any?)
OK, list who would go for with these picks?

Reckon you might be selling Darcy a bit short, Corporal.

Brayshaw is a future Fremantle Football Club Captain and Cerra should be the next Simon Black.

The others, no real harm in a bit of wait-and-see under a new encouraging and fostering environment.

Still doesn't change two facts:
i. Freo need to draft some more bloody good footballers.
ii. Freo need fewer players unavailable through injury. This being more important than i.

Our needs are 'xactly the same as all other clubs. Who'd have thunk it?

You, and others, are selling Darcy way short as supported by article on club web site a week ago. He is currently leading all rucks after 26 career games with 805 hitouts. That's 31 hitouts per game. He's still only 21yo and even Max Gawn credited him after a matchup pointing out that he wasn't as good until he was 25yo. It's no wonder the Cats would like to somehow trick us into giving him to them. He could be the difference between them and a premiership. Rucks as good as Sean do not grow on trees.

Any thoughts on Jack Newnes 26yo available as restricted free agent at Saints. Leigh Montagna reckons he'd be worth a crack at a new club and would not cost much, if anything.

Is there something wrong with looking to trade in a good player instead of list cloggers?

Who did you have in mind Polly? Someone else apart from Kelly because that's getting boring and irrelevant now he's made his feelings known.

DS, I think it might be the Freo way now Longmuir is getting his word in.

CA, I think you are a bit presumptive about some of those players, there are more good than bad in your list, and JL will show them the way.

Richmond: Sydney Stack
Deaf Cheats: Ben Long
Melbourne: Neville Jetta
Geelong: Quinton Narkle

Anyone trying to grow a moustache has to shave it off.

Other than that, get numbers and pig out on prime WA talent in the draft. My rule for this trade period: no magoos for our magoos.

If Kelly doesn't want to come to Fremantle we don't want him either......if we lose Hill use pick 6 and 7 for the best WA talent available......pick 26 for our academy Hill.....but if we lose Langdon I'd like to think we can bring someone with more experience like Blake Akres or Even Powell Pepper with pick 22 ?
