Cletus the same people in charge of recruiting are still there. At least, there has been no announcements otherwise that i am aware of. It’s a huge concern. It’s not an easy job but i would imagine much of the talent in recruiting lies in being able to find quality footballers outside of the well documented and studied top 30-50 kids. You can follow Callum Twomey’s writings on that and get a fair idea of who is who. And it is in this area Fremantle have failed miserably in recent years. In particular our drafting of players outside the colts/tac age group has been terrible.

I have banged on about it a bit recently. I would have thought with all the culling going on this area would have been looked at for change.

Given the sorts of players we've passed over in favour toilers and 2nd stringers, that suggests to me Lyon was full of shyte when he said he never got involved in drafting decisions.

If he didn't, WTF did he actually do?

This is what happens when you base your recruitment team in Melbourne. You get Schultz and Bewley from Williamstown instead of Stack & Pickett who are playing down the road.

Edit: on the flip side you get Luke Ryan from under the noses of ten Vic based teams.

Remember when we picked Barlow? Everyone was amazed that none of the Vic teams had picked him. "How could we have missed him?", they all asked themselves. But of course, that was back in the days when Freo had style and flair. Unfortunately in recent years a few of our risky picks haven't paid off. And I think its led us to believe that 184 cm Victorian midfielders are the safest option.

We took him as a rookie pick. There wasn't any risk. We got lucky.

In many posters views West Coast are an example of how a sucessful club should be run. They erred on all three of Kelly, Stack and Pickett.
As far as taking the risk on a debutant in a grandy, it hasn’t happened in many decades, so I don’t think Lyon is on his own in this regard. This year offered an until now unique opportunity for something like this to occur with the advent of a mid season draft.
Luke Ryan and Barlow are both mature aged players that have worked out well for us.
I don’t know that Richmond took too many risks in picking up Pickett, they essentially had a free swing at picking up an undoubted talent with previous off field issues.

Can someone please supply the article from The Worst where Haze apparently gives Freo recruiting staff a spray.??

I agree with him completely on the basis of the headline....

Paul Haselby takes massive swipe at Fremantle recruiting staff for missing Marlion Pickett and Tim Kelly

"Fremantle great Paul Hasleby believes the Dockers’ recruiters should lose their jobs for overlooking mature-aged WAFL jets Tim Kelly and Marlion Pickett."

“The first order of business for the new Fremantle coach is to sack the entire recruiting team #Pickett #Kelly”,” Hasleby said on Twitter.

Why is it just freo? The Evils didn't pick them up either.

The evils already have Ryan, Rioli, Jetta and J Cameron. Whereas we have our best forward, SonSon, playing in the middle, and after that...

I spruiked Mike Walters endlessly for 18 months before we selected him. Recently I was blathering on about Lewey, Liam Ryan and even Willie when he was in the SANFL. Those Other Knobs took those three so I just shut up - if they want ideas they can find them somewhere else.

But if Belly wants to share a pint, I'm all in.

We've only got so many picks, we can't pick them all! Just on Richmond's list we missed Bolton, Pickett, McIntosh, Baker, Luke English, Nathan Broad, Ben Miller, Sydney Stack and Alex Rance. Some work, some don't and we can't pick them all so we have to just get over it and concentrate on this years draft where is a lot of good local talent including our Next Gen Academy players.

So the whole point is DBTS Richmond did take Pickett an we didn't. Who said anything about it being a risk. They took a ready made playerwith natural talent to burn. We took a young kid from a reserves side who has struggled to get a kick at Peel.

Why can't it be the other way around? We seem unwilling to take a risk on talented players instead going for guys like Colyer, Bewley, Schultz, Giro, Crowden who have all shown they are not really AFL top 22 regulars

I’m confident this will change after today’s appointment, but you’ve got rocks in your head to think our club had the culture to make picks of Kelly, Stack and Pickett work.
