I think you've all missed the point here.

Here is the President of the FFC explaining to the supporters that they are changing the constitution of the club.

Do you or I get a say in that? Of course not, FFC is owned by the WAFC, we are as it turns out, not members but merely seat renters at a fancy stadium. It's easy to forget that with all the pretense of being involved with the club that they like to talk about.

What will this change mean? That the one area where the seat renters currently have a say in something relating to the club is about to be stripped away and handed back to the WAFC, the same entity that will change the constitution to say what it wants it to say.

Is there a better way to do this? Of course there is. Will they do it? Of course they won't. The reason being, that the board is obliged to represent the interests of the owners of the entity, and hold the management of the entity to account. Currently there is no management, so the owners (through the board) are exerting their control on the club. Why do it at all? Well the owners interests are in making money, in this way they are no different from any other corporate entity. So with seat renter numbers falling and hitting revenue, it is a perfectly logical move from them to sack the management, and take back some control to make it easier to sack the new management if they don't turn the ship around.

If anything, this message just goes to show that the commercialisation of our club is almost complete.

*Sighs*

The thing that scares me about it all, is that the WAFC gives the impression that it is under the control of WCE.

Yes the WAFC is under Their control. McHenry was their president and now Chair of WAFC. No conflict of interest there. Oh no.

This whole thing stinks how can you have member appointed board members when we don’t get a vote. It’s pigs in the trough. Oink oink.

Problem is we aren’t even members of the FFC there is one member the WAFC and they are controlled by THEM. So we are SCREWED.

I've already commented on the way in which the WAFC can influence what goes on at our club including appointment of the board and possibly our coach but been mocked for suggesting this but if you read the article in the West a couple of weeks ago it's obvious that they see themselves as having some control over these happenings. And a healthy slice of Weagles representation.

Those of you who know my history know that I initiated this change, and I say that without any self-aggrandisement.

What I believe is that this is a step forward. Assuming the constitution change is passed by the WAFC, it is not an election any more, but the Board appointing two members. Real members and not ex-players. I was assured by Board members and the outgoing CEO that the Club recognised that they were doing the wrong thing in putting up ex-players for the member-elected position. My argument was that if they wanted ex-players on the Board, they could just appoint them, but they must not exclude the real members having their say and adding their expertise to the Board.

Could this new system be abused? Yes, it could. However, I do believe that the Club is trying to change and I do not believe that they are out to "appoint mates" - at least not now.

The member-advisers has been a plan mooted for well over twelve months now and getting feedback from the rest of us "seat renters" will be useful. My bet is that the Club will invite people who put their hand up for the Board, but do not get appointed, to be in the feedback group.

Right now, the Board is asking us to trust them. I'm willing to do that. Mind you, I have been taken for a ride before...

Well said Hg.
Looks like you were tied in knots or hamstrung before - almost like Shibari.

I don't see how makes any practical difference to the scam they've been running, other than it completely removed the chance of having to an election.

They can just ask someone to nominate and then they can appoint them.

Shane you are right. They are saying, however, that they are not going to do that and I have taken them on good faith.

They need some interstate member representation. Say from Tasmania. Merc, I assume you have my contact details so I'll wait for your call.

Well I'm not super excited by the prospect of changing the constitution to give the board more power in exchange for good faith.

I admire your faith Merc but I do not share it. Trust in the board has been eroded by the power hungry decisions of the past decade and while the Steve's may be gone, the rest of the powerbrokers who allowed them to prosper remain on the board and are seeking further control over the club.

I know you put a lot of hard work into making the board act, more than any Freo fan around and I thank you for that. I just don't see this as the solution you had hoped for. Even if the current board is acting in the best interests of members at present (I have serious doubts to this), all it takes is another Steve on the board or thrown on there by the WAFC and they could have full power to bring anyone they like on board to rubber stamp their decisions.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Leaves me cold I'm afraid. Would be simpler ways to get there without being completely open for abuse. And if it is about the cost of the election, which has been floated before, say it and let account holders judge the value, and more importantly, if it can be achieved with lesser cost.

So.
i) Appoint ex-players to board by invitation
ii) Keep two member-elected seats for non ex-players
ii) Appoint a fan consultation group reporting to the board from nominated parties- no ex-players.

Not that hard?

We need experience and skilled administrators and governors on the board, not Betty Miller from Row D, Seat 12, Block 504
