TOPIC: Nyhuis

While true, I think they bring a large amount more to the table in other areas. Nyhuis seems pretty limited.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

They all seemed pretty limited under Lyon, so I don't think that reason holds much water, Biz.

Nyhuis or Duman - from what I gather that was always going to be the decision. There's a lot to like with both players.

Nyhuis was cooked after getting suspended for that tackle on Robbie Gray at Optus in 2018 - you know, the one where Gray heaped on the mayo pretending he was dead and then recovered miraculously the next round. Nyhuis went to the tribunal, pleaded guilty and apologised then got a multi week suspension. At the end of the year he was delisted, redrafted as a rookie and spent most of his time at Peel in 2019. We should have challenged at the tribunal - instead, we cooked the bloke and his card was marked. Unfair in my view.

But, what do I know - at the time I was the only one in my block that leaped up and bellowed out "Yous a bloody faker, Gray!" over and over pointing him out with my right index finger. When I finished my explosion the lady behind me said 'geez, how could you say that?' to a sprinkling of 'yeahs' around her. I just sat down, and like Ryan Nyhuis, took it on the chin.

Good luck, hope more footy opens up for you Ryan. To the lady behind me at Optus: you're spot on with almost everything you say during a game, but that one you got dead wrong.

Many years ago I sat behind Mark Harvey on a plane to a match. During a very brief chat with him I asked why a certain player (can't remember who) had been delisted. He said something along the lines that if a player doesn't improve each year it's best to delist them and try someone new to find out what their ceiling is.
Nyhuis was probably not improving so time to try someone else.

Bizkit you are are adopting a view simplistic view, So if is a GF and Nyhuis manages to keep say a Ablett type player to one goal he dosent deserve a game because he only got 5 kicks
he was never in roly`s good books because he was not suited to zone defence ,my opinion you need a balanced playing list ie you sometimes need a pure one on one defender

Don't feel so bad for Ryan...

I'd say he's no got a chance of getting a permanent spot in a 'wow' of a team, he'll have a 'wow' of a time, and probably be vying for a Brownlow or club fairest & best, or other such honour, next year...

What I'd love to know, is, what are the stats / how many other teams delist blokes that have played several games throughout the year. ?

We seem to do it a lot, and i get the impression other teams don,'t.

Fair enough delisting blokes that are injured, or haven't made the seniors after many years in the 2's, but sure a bloke like Nyhuis has some trade prospects???

Surely, has some value at trade time...?

Pretty sure we have got no value put of the following players in recent times :

De Boar, Mzungu, Silvagni, Deluca, Nyhuis, Zac Clarke, Sam Collins, Sutcliffe , Sheriden , Grey. , jack hannath.

Now, most of those were dumped BEFORE trade time.

Why do we do that??

When eight of those players have played for another Team at AFL level it does beg the question, even if it was just as the set of steak knives to get a deal over the line you’d wait until trades had finished before you threw them out.

Cletus - we had to dump Hannath before he got his butt wedged into the new waterslides at Cockburn. Which, all things considered, was a health and safety issue.

I feel sorry for him, I really do - and his parents. Imagine having a new born infant that was already too large for adult 4x×××l adult incontinence nappys. I mean, what do you do, try and use beach towels?

Scratch Hannath, Cletus but add Barlow. We didn't get anything for him did we?

It might be harsh on Nyhuis but I think it's far more palatable than most of the other delistings since 2015.

I don't think he'd come on too much since being drafted and while turning 23 in 2 more days, he's probably had enough opportunity to prove himself. I also think if you asked a Wilson or Ryan to do a purely lock down role and not help with rebounding the ball out of defence or winning the ball back, they'd have no problem blanketing an opponent.

The game has gone past that however and you have to offer something as an intercept player, good in the air or by being damaging on the rebound. I'm not sure Nyhuis was ever going to offer anything that way so I see limited scope for improvement. If he can go back and show a bit more of that side of his game, there might be more opportunities in the future as a mature pick.

Nyhuis didn't seem to have developed a whole lot since the Robbie Gray incident. I don't think the club was truly supportive of the poor bloke at that time. It seemed to me they hung him out to dry, and offered limited first team opportunities thereafter. Maybe he felt some lingering resentment about his perceived mis-treatment, and maybe he showed a bit of immaturity as a result, that didn't help his cause.

He was/is an excellent lock down defender, a role that's still required at times, and as such was a valuable squad member. it seems a waste to let him go for nothing.

My guess is we had to either delist or upgrade him. If we weren't going to upgrade him, the choice was simple.

Whether we let him down or not, it's a long bow to draw to say the Gray incident was the catalyst for his demise. Why wouldn't we have just delsisted him last year?

All that said, i thouvht he could play a bit. I guess we will see how the rest of the comp rates him now.
