TOPIC: Ed Langdon

The alternative would have been to go hard and then Ed goes to preseason draft to get to Melbourne and we get nothing. If this happened we would all have been calling for Belly's head.

I honestly think that we over rate our players by a huge margin. If decision making and execution skills are important we got a steal at 22 for a player who can run a lot and not much else......there I said it.....and I know we can hand out endless stats but count up the turnovers and Langdon is right up there. In fact Langdon typifies the type of player that Freo has in abundance....lots of effort and faff all skill/discipline.

He’s out of contract and his club of choice finished second last and has first dibs on him if he was forced into the draft. What were you expecting?

Yeah, lucky to get anything really. But atleast we bettered our draft point a few hundred, if that's any consolation. Atleast we will be in a good position next year with two 2nd rounders.

I agree with Flag.
In a nutshell we get 22 and a second round next year (say about 26) and Melbourne get Langdon and 26. (forget all the very late round picks). That's not too bad remembering that he could go to Melbourne for nothing in the pre-season draft.
People think we have been duded, but I think not.

Nah, we got screwed. I threw some relevant stats up earlier in the week but Langdon averages 2 clangers per game compared to B Hill's 3, has the same number of possessions each game (25) and is 2yrs younger. We should absolutely have received more.

Moving up 4 spots in the draft doesn't mean much unless you're certain there's someone a couple picks ahead who will take the player you're after and I can't see that being the case with the teams there. To gamble on the second rd pick next year is one thing I don't really agree with but giving up our second this year seems dumb. if it were our 3rd this year then I'd probably say this trade was reasonably even. As it is, Melbourne screwed us.

Next year's draft isn't weak, it's probably about par for the course. The problem is all the talent seems to be tied to clubs already so there's few good kids that are 'live'. We've got Western and Walker who likely go early and we'll need points for and then there's a few other great WA kids who could push high like Grainger-Barras. I don't see Melbourne staying down the bottom for too long though so a pick closer to 30 is likely which is far from Langdon's worth.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's all well and good to huff and puff Biz but would you have preferred he went to the preseason draft.?? That was the one simple option with Ed unlike Hill who is still under contract.

The preseason draft I believe was a real worry so I think we did ok

So Biz you expect Melbourne to improve 8 spots next season?! From second last to be in finals contention? That would be Brisbane Lions like. Melbourne have some serious structural (forward and back) problems and speed in the mids problems. They might improve 4 spots as I have generously allowed for.
Basically we have traded Langdon for 22 as we have always wanted. Call it evens.

You haven't addressed that he's better and younger than Hill - he's just out of contract.

Thanks Ed, we screwed up but we're moving on.

Melbourne finished 4th the year before with effectively the same young list minus Hogan (but plus May and Lever). Now they've added Tomlinson and a pacey winger in Langdon, they'll be fine next year.

Players go to trade who are set to be out of contract all the time. We still had another week to go before the trade deadline so there's plenty of time to negotiate.. The threat of GC taking Langdon before Melbourne if he did go into the draft would be a worry, not to mention the 9 other Melbourne sides who could give us a better deal to trade him instead of allow him to go to the draft for no compensation.

There are options and time which makes this a definite loss for a quality young player. We could do much better.

You're a bit slow to catch on Biz, firstly there is not a week left, Trade week finishes on Wednesday night and nothing happens over the weekend, Ed Langdon had nominated Melbourne as destination club and there were no other options except the preseason draft. It's OK to admit you're wrong.
I would have liked more too, but it was never going to happen. Move on.

Langdon and 26 to Melbourne for pick 22 is a dud deal for us, no 2 ways about it. A fair deal would have been Langdon for pick 22.
