Unread those comments by Ralph and it validates a belief I have had for some time, especially since free agency has come into play, less prestigious clubs will always be at a disadvantage. This plays out in the ability to attract and retain players. I think it also goes a fair way to understanding why these same clubs, end up in salary cap trouble with mediocre lists, as they have to pay players even average players more in order to resist overtures from other clubs.
Duffield made a valid point recently on his podcast. West Coast started out with 60-70% of the West Australian population as a supporter base. As a player you will have a many more opportunities, coming from this playing group.
I don’t know how to combat it but if the AFL is genuinely concerned with an even competition where all teams get their moment it should be looking at this.
The same would also pose a problem for teams such as North Melbourne, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs versus teams such as Hawthorn, Richmond and Collingwood.
I’m not saying they are insurmountable, and there is nothing we can do about it but it is, in my opinion a thing.
