TOPIC: Draft

You're talking about 22 players out of something like 800 total players. If there are 80 players drafted then theoretically 2/3 will be All Australians in any given year. There have been many players from those drafts who were All Australians before this year and will be in the future. If you look at them as a whole, those numbers rise dramatically.

2011 for example has Chad Wingard, Toby Greene, Sam Docherty, Tom Mitchell, Elliott Yeo and Lachie Neale amongst those who have won All Australian honours while plenty more have been in the initial squad and are likely to earn that honour in the future.

While I think Kelly had a very good first couple of months to the season, he did tail away after the bye when he received some more attention and his teammates in the midfield weren't drawing close checking opponents away from him. He dropped to 23.9 possessions per game after the Rd 13 bye and while not being bad, was not the same player in the first half of the season.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

What about Kyron Thorne? I liked the way he read the play, and his vision of where the footy should go. I reckon he is worth a punt in the mid rounds.

I'd be happy to have Tyrone Thorne on the list with a later pick. He has plenty of tricks and would be an excitement machine if he makes it at AFL level. He is very small though and will not be ready for a while once drafted. Having said that, he doesn't mind the tough stuff so it'll be interesting to see how he goes against much bigger bodies.

Got a bit of the Hypens, but yeah same bloke, Biz. I agree, he doesn't shirk anything, and while he might be no Fyfe or Cripps build wise, he is wiry and looks like he will beef up a little bit. He is the type of player who would have struggled with Freo over the last few years, but given a year in the 2's playnig a more natural and attacking style of game (like the U18's play) I could see him being handy at either end of the ground.

I’m not sure about Kelly, if we get him, he will be easily in our top five players, possibly top two. He would offer excellent support to Fyfe, Walters, and Mundy in the midfield, an area we were soundly beaten at times this year. A midfield of Fyfe, Kelly, Walters, Cerra, Brayshaw, Blakely and Tucker looks to have a lot more depth in the next three years than without Kelly.
This setup would hopefully lead to Fyfe and Walters being able to be released forward more where both are genuinely dangerous. Something like 70% midfield 30% forward.
We will be sadly lacking pace with the loss of both Hill and Langdon but this won’t be immediately rectified by draft picks. I would hope that S Hill can get fit. I would throw Carter on a wing, and out of left field Giro as well. Giro may be lacking a little for skill but is an elite runner, let’s face it Langdon doesn’t offer much in the skill department.
My concern would be, if we are to get Kelly, and maintain a presence in the top ten, Geelong will want the deal to include Darcy. I don’t see that we have cover for Darcy and would need to recruit an established ruckman, something the Eagles and Hawthorn have never shied away from. Ryder is on the table at a good price, but at 32 is a very short term option but I think an ideal partner to Lobb.
Should it pan out this way, we should be able to maintain a high pick, which I would then use to draft Jackson. With the pick received for Langdon predicted 20, we should then be able match for Henry, and have a crack at other West Aussies. I like Robertson.

Under no circumstances should Darcy and the word trade be spoken in the same sentence, or printed out on a keyboard for that matter. He is a non negotiable especially since Sandi's retirement and is only going to get better. And we don't need any old hacks like Ryder who got toweled up by Hodor last time they played each other. I can't believe what universe some people are on when this gets bought up.

Ok you Nut - when he gets knighted by the Queen for services to the art of footy, you'll bite your tongue about Sir Paddy Ryder.

Get Kelly, and play him on the wing. He will give a solid option out of defence and serve the footy up to our forwards. We have Blakely, Cerra, & Brayshaw for inside grunt, & Walters for the delivery from the middle. Fyfe to CHF.

Oh, and Darcy as Ruck, Ruck rover & Rover. He has shown he can handle all 3 roles at once. Why anyone in their right mind would trade him is beyond me.

On another note, there is an indicative draft list published on the AFL website. We have pick 6,24 and pick 78. How the hell did we miss out on rounds three and four?

A club with no depth and no draft picks. Its a bloody dumpster fire.

We'd only waste those picks anyway.

I see this an opportunity to avoid distraction and indecision and focus our recruiters attention on a narrow target.

Yeah Hypen not a great position considering we need points value to pick up Henry. I think Freo will be pushing for a little more than pick 20 for Langdon. Possibly some 3rd or 4th round picks to sweeten the deal.

I know Weller was contracted and GCS were desperate to get him so we were able to screw pick 2 from them, Langdon has turned out to be a better footballer than Weller but is out of contract, I think if Melbourne trade pick 3 with Gws and get back picks 12 and 14 the least Melbourne should pay is pick 14 for Langdon, pick 21 is an insult.

All trade picks mentioned have been moved back one spot because GCS will be given pick 2 as compensation for being useless.

And they've also known about Jeff Farmer's son as well who's up for father/son in the next couple of years so hopefully they won't trade away all our future picks either.
