I think pick 2 is wasted on us and I would be happy loading up on picks from 10-30. The top players are good but I don't think they're that much better than those in the next bracket and I would happily take 2 of them for one of the higher picks.
In my discussions of last year's draft, I claimed we should be moving up the order and trying to hold onto our top picks because the draft fell away after the top 7 or so players and those top 7 were as good as any that had been before them. The likes of Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine (in the pre-season anyway!) King, Rozee and Smith have been fantastic and pretty much done as expected. This year is very different and that top end talent isn't as good or that much better. The next rung of players underneath the top end is a lot better this year and full of West Aussies.
We'll need far more points to match bids for Henry as well as replacing a lot more players leaving the list with Sandi, Ballas, Bennell and Kersten already out the door with more to come. We need quality replacing them so we have to get a few more picks towards that first/second round.
As a result, I'd be happy to trade our top draft pick for 2 in the early teens and try and nab some of this WA talent that's a little underrated outside WA. If Hill or Langdon go, I'd rather grab a few picks in this range than 1 at the pointy end. I'll probably come up with a more thorough analysis closer to the draft but I think this year, it's far more beneficial to get more upper mid range picks than high end.
