TOPIC: Draft

OK, some creative minds required here. Looking at the Draft order on the AFL site today and we currently have picks 6,(first round), 24(second round) and 78(fifth round).
We are all over getting Academy pick Liam Henry and two good early picks from Robertson, Jackson, Elijah Taylor or Trent Rivers.
I'm not sure how this works as we could get high draft picks for Langdon and Brad Hill but if we use one of those for Tim Kelly I think we are still short on picks to get the players we want, including points to match any drafting of Liam Henry. Any thoughts?

If Brad Hill wants to go back to Melbourne so bad, forget St Kilda now that this is up for grabs... Pick 2

I think pick 2 is wasted on us and I would be happy loading up on picks from 10-30. The top players are good but I don't think they're that much better than those in the next bracket and I would happily take 2 of them for one of the higher picks.

In my discussions of last year's draft, I claimed we should be moving up the order and trying to hold onto our top picks because the draft fell away after the top 7 or so players and those top 7 were as good as any that had been before them. The likes of Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine (in the pre-season anyway!) King, Rozee and Smith have been fantastic and pretty much done as expected. This year is very different and that top end talent isn't as good or that much better. The next rung of players underneath the top end is a lot better this year and full of West Aussies.

We'll need far more points to match bids for Henry as well as replacing a lot more players leaving the list with Sandi, Ballas, Bennell and Kersten already out the door with more to come. We need quality replacing them so we have to get a few more picks towards that first/second round.

As a result, I'd be happy to trade our top draft pick for 2 in the early teens and try and nab some of this WA talent that's a little underrated outside WA. If Hill or Langdon go, I'd rather grab a few picks in this range than 1 at the pointy end. I'll probably come up with a more thorough analysis closer to the draft but I think this year, it's far more beneficial to get more upper mid range picks than high end.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz how do you rate Luke Jackson? I think he has huge potential and can see him going inside the top 10. Also the problem with downgrading our first pick is it means we may loose it when a bid comes for Henry. From my understanding if a bid comes prior to our first pick we have to use our next pick as part of the points make up. A bid is probably unlikely to come before pick 6 but likely in the teens.

You would make a great politician Bizket. From memory you were strongly advocating we get Hogan with our first rounder and not moving up the draft order in last year's draft.

I think Jackson or Robertson are the Weagles priority picks especially with aging and patched up Natanui and little else in the ruck department Jackson is their preference. I'd like to get him first and then Liam Henry when he get's picked which is likely to be before our pick 24 so we need more picks to make that happen than our pick in the 70's.

With picks 2 & 6 in our skyrocket, we can turn them into anything we want.

I like Luke Jackson, he's one of those in that 15-30 bracket that I'd like to get another pick for. I don't see him as a ruckman at AFL level but I think he'll be a great forward/back up ruck. He's very athletic and plays almost like a midfielder after the ruck contest. he's not dissimilar to Lobb in that way although with a little less height and better movement around the ground. He's got a lot of potential and could be the best KPF in the draft.

I think you'll find a lot of my posts talking up having 2 top picks and trying to get Rankine and Lukosius which was based off our first pick and trading out Neale. As it went we gave both high picks away in order to get Hogan and Lobb. I was okay getting Hogan and I still rate him very highly. Being okay with trading pick 6 out for Hogan was due to the likelihood of Rankine and Lukosius being gone by our pick along with Hogan wanting a trade to Freo not being a well known factor till trade time! I'm sure there's plenty of posts saying as much from trade time last year.

I will cop to not thinking Rozee would be as good as he has been and only loosely including him in those top 7!

We now know that Hogan and Lobb came here as a quick fix for our forward stocks, with a backdrop of Rosich's 2019 KPI, of getting into finals.
Not necessarily wrong, but hardly a coincidence. We haven't been developing enough players out of the draft.
