TOPIC: Hugh Dixon...

Remember back to the days of the sub, Biz, and how he was dragged game after game. Then, with Pav in his last couple of seasons, and the chance to let him mentor Tabs into a KPF, while still playing. But no, Tabs only got a crack when Pav was out injured. It's not as though we had key forwards coming out our ears at that time.

The way I remember it is Tabs getting all the opportunity in the world because we had no other key forwards to compete with him but squandering most of it.

He played the last 5 games including 2 finals in 2014, 10 games in a row in 2015 with a total of 15 for the year and little impact (14 goals), 17 games in 2016 for 18 goals and then injuries interrupting his patchy form for 2017/18 (17 games for 21 goals combined). That brings us to this year where he had 13 goals from 9 games, again underwhelming for someone in their prime at 26.

Hopefully some of those performances are attributed to the way we played and set up but a portion of that has to go to the player too. He didn't put his best foot forward over those years and demand a spot.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz, I normally have few disagreements with you over player assessments but this time around I reckon you're dead wrong.

Tabs was always a bit of a project and needed games to develop. Playing under Roly and his almost non-existent forward structure hampered his development. He was subbed out more than any other player in his first 50 games. He'd get one game and if he didn't get a bunch of goals, he'd spend three weeks at Peel.

Then they tried to turn him from a forward into a ruckman which only added hurdles to development, especially when he was getting dropped for ruck performances that weren't all that great.

Since he's been allowed to operate as a pure forward, alongside other forwards, he has shown he is definitely an AFL standard player.

It's hard to demand a spot when you're being mucked around by your coach. He's a better player than your assessment.

Tabs is worth his spot even if he only averages a goal a game. His contested marking means we have a get out jail free card coming out of defense - much the same as Darling and Kennedy supply for WC.

Sure he can take a contested mark but he can also drop easy chest marks, kick poorly and when he does mark it he takes an eternity to decide what to do next. I hope he gets an injury free run at it but he is not the saviour.

If Lobb and Hogan are fit it’s going to be Tabs, Cox and Dixon fighting for that third tall spot.

No, I watched him at the start of this season. His decision making was much quicker and better. It was obvious that the deficiencies in his game had been identified and addressed.

I'm not saying Tabs is rubbish or anything along those lines. I think he's amongst the better marks in the team and AFL. Tabs was often underwhelming and undeserving of his spot in the team though and I don't think the argument he was dropped a lot really holds up.

He was occasionally a sub but the majority of his career remains unaffected by it. He played 4 games in his first year (2013) where we were successful and he didn't have much of an opportunity to get in ahead of Pav and co. Only 1 of those games was sub affected.

In 2014 he played 9 games and he played 84% or more game time in all but 2 of those games so I'm not sure the sub excuse holds up too well there.

2015 was the last year of the sub and he played every game from Rd 2 to Rd 11, 7 of those with 75% or more game time. The other 3 were about 50% game time with 5 more games later in the season that were split between sub and full game time.

Overall, there's only 8 games where he had less than 60% game time over the sub period (28 total games), 11 under 84% game time. He had plenty of opportunity over that period which only became greater as he got older.

Your assertion he'd get 1 game then turfed to Peel doesn't really hold up. He was often persisted with despite minimal output (75 goals in 71 games to date). Only 5 times in his career has he kicked more than 2 goals in a game with several of those by one goal to end up on 3. Even for a developing forward, you want them aiming for 2 goals a game and Tabs often struggled to get 1.

There are some extenuating circumstances but definitely not enough to justify the low output in his career to date. Hopefully he can get fit for next year and have a break out season but I wouldn't blame all his previous woes on RL or stunted growth. He's had lots of opportunities and hasn't delivered yet. I reckon Dixon is at a pretty similar level to what Tabs was at the same age.

Biz, the fact is, he was dropped when others in the squad were persisted with (and still were to Lyon's last game) that had not performed as well. Also, Lyon did not take the heaven sent opportunity to let him get a footy learning from Pav.

On behalf of our former coach, I would like to thank Matt Tabs for unselfishly occupying the role of full forward for the welfare of his teammates - an acknowledgement previously given to Mr. 300 and Something and Captain Fyfe, unacknowledged with Cam McCarthy.

You want to talk about the sub? T bone would of played 50% of his games as a sub. Coming on for 10 mins then running laps for an hour after the game. Poor bastard
