Do yourself a favour and watch the ‘13 prelim again.

The game probably evokes memories of the ultimate defensive pressure game Freo has ever played.

But take a look at the ball movement. In the first half I counted only 4 times the ball kicked slowly after a stoppage, free kick or a mark to a contested pack.

There was constant movement beside and ahead of the ball.

Yeah the goal kicking was still off but every foray was positive and dangerous with scoring potential. It was exciting to watch. It looks like wet toast look now. And it was under Lyon.

The questions are when did this change? Why? And what will it take to get this back?

Did Lyon simply evolve to the thoughtless high bomb? Did the players? Is the effort just not doable both ways? I note that some teams do it today. Coincidentally they are in the top four ladder spots.

And where do we find another Crowley - he was a bloody good footballer and creative in attack as well as on the tag.

Rule changes in particular the limit of rotations hurt his game plan.
The ability to constantly rotate players to keep the pressure was somewhat diminished by that limitation.

Also the game plan ultimately did not stand up to hawthorn more precise and skill based approach. Not in 2013 or 2014 replay where we were belted and 2015 preliminary where we were trying and manful but ultimately unsuccessful.

Modern footy ( as opposed to Roly version 2 ) is either possession based ( West Coast ) or run and carry based ( Richmond ). Both require team/player discipline and the skill set by most/all players. Freo have never played either of these well, relying on turnovers from forward pressure to score goals. I was there in Geelong when we won that SF and that victory was based on turn over pressure and fast ball movement down the middle. We havn't played at that intensity since and no wonder as it results in soft tissue injuries and tests the player list depth.
I hope the new coach can convert our guys into a Richmond type run and carry based game given the list that we will have in 2020.

The AFL hated that sort of suffocate and stun football, so reduced rotations the following year and again the next.

Lyon kept trying to play the same old game with older bodies, and they couldn't maintain it. Other clubs adapted, but still had focus on skills.

Funny, I ran into Creepy the other day and thanked him for everything, trashed Lyon and Harvey (Pinchy) and said much the same thing - a bloke like him is missing at Freo. He's a sizable unit.

No, exceed.
Movement ahead of the ball is the difference. All teams play under the interchange rules. Four teams still consistently create good movement ahead of the ball. Not just parallel sprint forwards but angles, patterns that create space for other leads or at worst one-on-ones rather than six-man stationary packs. Football watchers wanted it. Freo stopped doing it. Lyon died because of it.

I think he got lazy and thought he could coach by design because he had a long term contract and the sanctuary of calling it a rebuild. Everything became systems and routine and there was always another chance to fix it tomorrow.

There was no urgency off the field and consequently there was no urgency on the field.

THe rule change that (deliberately) stuffed the Rossco game plan was the extension of the free zone at marks and free kicks from 5 to 10 metres. Gave players much more flexibility in the penetration they got from that kick or a greater ability to run on and link with teammates.

Turned the Lyon wall, ahead of which we built turnover pressure, into a Maginot Line oppositions could go around or over, or drop in front of, with much less pressure.

We couldn’t adapt, and got smacked for it.

Opposition coaches worked out how to beat Lyon's game plan in 2015. When Richmond ended our unbeaten run we were never the same after that. We went from dominating and playing attractive footy to grinding out ugly wins. It's all been downhill ever since that game. Lyon was too stubborn to change it up even after 4 years of failure.

The only time we had the opposition stumped is when we had a few guys in the forward area, hit targets three times in a row and hand passed to a team mate more than a metre away in space and not covered.

After 2015 a major part of the Ross's re-stump was the fact that the best picks were not going to the new teams as much any more and Ross decided to tank !
By doing this he could get rid of the old guys and replace them with young fit ones , therefore he could use his old game plan with the young players .
It still was out dated and the game had changed ( moved on ) but ross didn't .
A clueless master plan gone wrong !
