TOPIC: Dear Steve, Ross and Dale. Some home truths

Walter the baker Dear Steve, Ross and Dale. Some home truths 4 years 7 months ago #1

Walter the baker
As the season is about to close its well and truly time for you to face up to the reality of the last 8 years.
You may be able to justify Ross' appointment based on some success after he began, which essentially took full advantage of the list that Mark Harvey put together. That said, you didn't fulfil your duties as the leaders of this organisation as you chased short term goals ahead of establishing an strong ongoing powerhouse. You only stumbled on the marketable 'rebuild for sustained success' after you realised your lack of forward planning during Ross' first three years at the club.
So how I'd the rebuild going. Let's ignore the semantics - three, four, five years of rebuild - whatever the figure we are now at a point where we can make some judgements.
We now sit 13th on the ladder with only the Suns and Demons as contenders for the worst teams in the comp. Many punters scoffered at Cornes statement that we shared worst team status with the Suns but if his statement is wrong it isn't far off the mark.
Has the rebuild delivered - clearly not?
Will it deliver? Based on the lack of depth in the team and the inability to see growth in players recruited during the rebuild I for one can't see how we can challenge top teams with our current list. We will lose Sandi, Ballas and Mundy over the next couple of seasons (all AA players in their day). Langdon and B Hill are in our top six players and, depending on who you listen to, are either looking at options or already gone. S Hill is also in the rumour mill. So what are we left with if you ignore Fyfe and Walters. A decent backline, a very thin midfield and a flakey injury prone forward line. All this after a long rebuild and a promise of success before the end of RoLy's contract.
By any objective measure the rebuild has not worked and those responsible need to be held accountable. Unfortunately it is a closed shop and they are accountable only to their own appointees. Failure is self perpetuating with the current lot and the future is looking grim. Here's hoping that RoLy is the genius that Steve thinks he is and pulls a rabbit out of the hat otherwise we are looking at a new coach in 2021 and another rebuild after that!

Whilst i don't disagree with a lot of this, if we had the following available the last 4 weeks it would make a lot of difference as to where we are now:

A Pearce
R Lobb
L Ryan
J Hogan
M Taberner
S Hill
N Wilson
B Cox

If you take this type of list from any time they would struggle.

Issue is we dont have enough back up and this leads to player in roles they shouldn't being playing in.
It's been a disaster year again

What I don't understand is why our skill and decision making has been so bad for so long.

We see poor kicking as a direct function of poor technique but it can't be that we've actively drafted players with poor technique over the past eight years. It's been prevalent for so long. So entrenched.

The problem seems to be a combination of where team mates are and are not standing and I reckon every time they play they are having a conscious battle between what they are coached to do and what their instincts tell them to do.

Never has so convincing a case been made for sacking a coach midgame, than the vision of Sandi and Fyfe alongside each other on the bench at the 10 minute mark of the first quarter, while Hurley repeatedly outmarked Ballas, Switkowski and Matera inside 50.

I hope our future doesn't rely on that injury list coming good.

Wilson is the big loss, Hill and Ryan may never play for Fremantle again. Lobb is a good forward but an average ruckman - which is where he will continue to be played by Lyon. Pearce, Taberner and Hogan may never play a full season of football.

So, that's interesting. I've heard the noise about not offering a contract to S. Hill, but haven't heard anything about L. Ryan. What's the buzz with Ryan then - long-term injury, trade bait, or disgruntlement?

There was talk in the middle of the season. I have no idea if it was based in fact.

I thought the talk was very vaguely along the line of, there’s ten Vic clubs who regret not picking him up and he’s from Victoria so surely one of them can get a contract worth enough to entice him to move back to Victoria.

In short, there was very little substance.

It would be like living in Reykjavik, why would anyone want to? Sure, they play football there but I can't see anyone from there pining for the fjords all that much.

Re: Luke Ryan. I recall Hagdorn lumping his name when talking about Langdon, Hill, a while back. Shot-in-the-dark stuff at best. Hagdorn knows nothing, makes things up, and if he gets anything right, it's from other sources. L. Ryan is contracted until end of 2020.
