2012 - got us to finals- unlimited rotations
2013 got us to GF- unlimited rotations Freo average highest in league at 145 per game
2014 got to finals and were stuffed. In hindsight the start of the rot. Rotations capped at 120. Made top 4 but ran out of steam in finals.
2015 minor premiers, yippee. Stuffed in the finals-Rotations capped at 120. Made top 1 but ran out of steam in finals.
2016,2017,2018,2019 - just stuffed.- Rotations capped at 80 ran out of steam after the bye rounds
So really since 2013 we have pretty much been stuffed.

This is not a coincidence. Roly has failed to adapt his game plan to fewer rotations and effort over skill just doesn’t work

The inconsistency of message when selecting the team really gets me. When discussing Cam McCarthy possibly being selected for this weeks game Ross said,

“We threw (selecting McCarthy) up at match committee but at the end of the day we need to keep integrity of selection and performance,” Lyon said.

Fair comment on face value. Yet it is alright to select S. Hill, Ballantyne and Sandilands and insert them straight into the team without any form or in some cases no match fitness at all, or ignoring Banfield after a number of very good WAFL games (thankfully it was noticed this week)
There does not appear to be any integrity of selection and performance, just a case of playing favourites....again. If it is confusing for us supporters, just imagine how it must be for the players themselves.

So to me, if we can half the deficit (66 points) then that's an improvement.

Ah, yes, the good old 'we must be improving because we are losing by smaller margins' trick.

I mean if we are accepting that as our measure of improvement, why bother putting the effort in at all. Just jog about aimlessly and then claim "we came second".

Of course, you'll probably lose all your sponsors and most of your members but what the hell, we came second. Wooptee-bloody-do.

You need to measure improvement against the other teams in the competition. Assess your improvement on performance indicators like number of wins in a season and ladder position in a season and finals wins in a season.

I have assessed our improvement and find that we are overall compared to all the teams in the competition, we are doing better than Gold Coast and Melbourne.
They have both beaten us this year, so am actually unsure of my assessment.

...and so is this the part where someone says ‘that was a really enjoyable and unpredicted win, I’m so pleased for the players and their level of commitment to the contest and each other, against a more skillful opposition. Perhaps there will be some brief, positive recognition of their efforts in the West Australian. I would prefer not to comment on the umpiring - I thought there were some errors, but confess I am not wholly objective. And the end result was not overly influenced. Perhaps I have been catastrophising a little lately. Shane was right when he predicted a win, although I admit I was a little concerned that he may have been indulging in some dramatic irony. I will savour this moment of pleasure in a season which started with promise but has been a little disappointing at times.
