TOPIC: Cockburn

I wonder how the club is assessing its move to Cockburn. Based on results since the move it hasn’t resulted in the elite outcomes that were promised. I wonder if Nick Dal Santo’s thoughts on St Kilda’s ill fated move to Seaford strike a chord with our head honcho Steve

>>
He echoed former captain Nick Riewoldt’s feelings on the disastrous move to Seaford in 2011.

“Horrific, and we knew straight away,” Dal Santo said.

“It didn’t have a feel. It wasn’t us and the analogy I’ve used is it was like sitting on your couch at home: you were still sitting on your couch, but it wasn’t at your house, it was someone else’s house.

“The place was sterile, didn’t have a lot of feel, didn't have any atmosphere.

“It definitely wasn’t a place that we wanted to go to.

“It wasn’t Moorabbin, it wasn’t our homeland, it didn’t have our people around.

“It just felt different.”

STERILE indeed
Cockburn is not Fremantle.
I find it repelling as I find Fremantle's original home base compelling. In the heart of Freo, it was home.

Seems like irony to me that the cats were training at Freo oval today while we were at cockburn. Also it seems very early for an interstate team to arrive, are they trying to reduce the effect of jet lag?

The good news in, when it gets do bad that people start lamenting the move to Cockburn again, it means we're due for a win.

I filled the car up and took the kids down to the family day/open training thing they put on during the last school holidays. Freo were flying at the time. There was none of that distraught, shell -shocked look on the faces of the fans you see on the buses after games. People were smiling. It was the first time I had seen the etaf or whatever it is called. Visually, it wasn't the architectural wasteland I was expecting. I am not really a fan of modern architecture and just presumed the building would be some kind of mash up of the surrounding units but it looks better than that. Don't get me wrong it's still a rec centre but it could have been worse. It would have been cool to see them build some kind of nightmarish brutalist building made of solid concrete that would last a thousand years but I guess they had a budget. But good lord the physical environment is depressing. Look, an electrical tower! It's really close! A freeway and train line! The entire southwest corner of the oval is what appears to be a giant sinkhole, with a gradient so steep as to render it useless for ever sitting on the bank and watching footy. And why would you not landscape it? After spending hundreds of millions couldn't you plant a few trees? It honestly looks like the Cockburn council has lured the club down there with the crappest piece of land they could find and the club has taken it.

Moving out to the suburbs and away from a clubs traditional fan base has rarely worked. Not just in aussie rules. One of the main reasons two of the biggest NBA stars (I forget their names) recently signed with the Brooklyn Nets over the Knicks was purportedly because the Knicks have moved their training base 30 k's out of Manhattan. St.Kilda went home as soon as they could from Seaford. Melbourne hate training out at Casey. Soccer is full of similar scenarios. Young people want to be where the action is and that is usually in the inner city. I understand Freo were running out of space and Fremantle was prohibitively expensive, but they should have held out till they could have found somewhere that was still close to Fremantle, like Melville, Palmyra or wherever.

I don't think the etaf is going to be the selling point they think it is.

I wasn't necessarily being facetious mentioning the waterslides. I've been down there a couple of times, on both occasions the sound of those little tackers whooping it up in the pool/waterslides made the place a fun place to be. That's gotta be a bonus to everyone there - after a gaggle of losses maybe the little tackers lifted the spirits of the players. Then again, in winter the slides may be closed.

Still, I loved the Freo Oval location - even spent a couple of hours handing out those 'Don't Leave Freo' leaflets (with Zorro and a few of his mates).

Steve please....The State Government kicked in $10 million, as did the Commonwealth Government, with the City stumping up $65 million because it's the Cockburn ARC sport and recreation facility located in Cockburn Central
Also the AFL and Dockers also contributed...What???
The West Coast will own their Lathlain paddock even with State and Fed $10 mil.

It's pretty sh#t to be walking past Fremantle Oval this week knowing that it's our next opponent training there, and not us.

We all know the jumper change and move to Cockburn were stupid decisions. Problem is our constitution does not allow us to vote out tge idiots who made the decisions. Time for tge entire board to be voted in by tge real members, us not the WAFC.

Now that the ETAF is built, it might be cheaper to move the whole of Fremantle to Cockburn to give it that old Freo feel.
