AFL footy boss Steve Hocking has flagged a loosening of the restrictions around runners and a “decluttering” of the pre-season following a Competition Committee meeting.

Be a shame if they let them back out there. It's been a delight to watch the game without all the clutter on the ground. All they need to do now is tell someone to tone down the bloody advertising at games. It's become obscene.

I thought there might be a loosening after Longmire's comments on the weekend. He made some good points. But I have a lot of fun watching Mzungu beaver full throttle to get off the field before the centre bounce - either he's got too many messages or he dawdles too much when he's out there. Most times I see the clock ticking down on the scoreboard and he's only got a handful of seconds to make the bench.

I don't know if it's the volume so much as that I don't want to hear what they're saying but when you're actually watching the football, the thing you paid money to watch, and there are back lit animated adverting signs flashing non-stop in the background, it's exhausting.

Even worse on TV. I would rather put up with the runners than the advertising and those clowns with the microphones. (Ground announcers and commentators)

Agree with a Shane about the flashing/moving advertising. Some of our games are hard enough to watch but the advertising, is not necessary and I’m surprised that it doesn’t affect people susceptible to migraine headaches. It gives me the shites.

In typical fashion, we’ve followed the yanks and turned a good day into a circus with all the hoo har at games nowadays.

One of my hobby horses has just trotted past, so I'm jumping on.

The incessant noise in all the breaks at the footy drives me nuts. If the singer during quarter time does a slow song, its actually a relief, because it is not the sort of strident, in-your-face noise that is so annoying.

Once upon a time, you'd have a chat at quarter time and 3 quarter time. But obviously some research somewhere says that any moment of silence might have us thinking, "Why am I here? I really don't know. I think I'll get up and leave now."

And the flashing lights Shane, and the flashing lights...

Blame Commetti,

It works for the Yanks at their basketball and gridiron, so it will be a great idea at Subi/MCG et al; Trust me on this Andrew.

If you think the Americans - with states like Utah, Ohio, Idaho, Arkansas, etc - could come up with that kind of stuff you're kidding yourself. This is a clip from before an exhibition/pre-season game at Rogers Arena in Vancouver - it maybe not rock as much as a regular season game, but this is how pro-sports is meant to kick-off:

I say crank up the volume and rev up those flashing lights Optus - you blokes need to head to the Spearwood Library for a quiet chat.
