TOPIC: Adam Goodes - The Final Quarter

Any takers for a discussion about this doco?

Sobering viewing.

Looks like Adam Goodes was an amazing guy throughout - maintained his dignity.

Wasn't thrilled to be reminded that the Dockers crowd booed, albeit by that stage he was being booed every week.

We have our share or racists and sheep just like every other club.

It was a disgrace to the game and no club can hold its head up or the AFL.

I'll admit to really looking forward to seeing this - the doco seemed good but broadcasting it on a commercial network killed it (in my view). 2014, the tension is building, the outrage is reaching a fever pitch and then (verbatim):

* The Project - network promo, Special Discussion
* Lake Joondalup Baptist College - enrol your kids now
* Hungry Jack's - enjoy our new brekky wraps
* Cadbury Dairy Milk - a glass and a half
* AMart Furniture
* Energiser Ion4 Max Plus batteries
* Blueprint Homes - the Bonanza series
* Ethical Nutrients - be good to you guts
* Energiser Plus Ion4 Max Plus batteries again
* Powerade - replace your something or other like the champions
* Leggos - new parmigiana cooking sauce
* Sportsbet - if you team goes two goals up
* Youi Insurance - save on your car insurance
* KitKat - enjoy a break
* Up n Go - low GI, make the most of your gut
* My Budget - make the most of your finances
* Australian Survivor - coming soon to Network 10
* The Project - Special Discussion following The Final Quarter

All of this before picking up Adam Goodes again. No kidding, that was one 'break' in the doco. Sure, I hope the makers made some cash off of that - someone did, but it effectively neutralised any sensitivity at all. Killed it in my view. Shame.

I loved it and still feel ashamed at Goodesy treatment.
The notion he was a faker or staged for frees is perpetrated by a few that may have watched one or two games in entire of his 370 odd..He was a jet that always played hard and fair.

As said prior we have our fair share of sheep or even other club supporters attending a AFL final..
I dont recall the booing anywhere as loud as the doco showed at our 2015 Home final.
In fact, I recall a fair bit of self policing going on and everytime someone booed near us they were shut down pretty quick..
Could they have added a bit of mayo there or am I mistaken?

It's picked up through microphones and then blended in for effect, so unless they were at the game, they wouldn't know how loud the booing was.

But from the point of telling the story, if you're Goodes and you're out on the ground and you hear one person boo, you'd just be thinking "For f*** sakes, not again" rather than "Beauty, less people booed me this week"

I thought it brought out some good discussion points. While Adam was targeted for racist remarks, I don't think the majority of people were booing him because of that. Neither did the commentary in the doco, but they likened crowds to sheep, who didn't even know why they were doing it.

He was staging pretty blatantly and consistently during those last couple of years. I don't think that was befitting of a him as a champion of the game, and his Australian of the Year status.

But nevertheless, the wholesale booing week in week out, had a severe affect on him, and people needed to see the consequences of that.

But the comments he made about racism in the sport needed to be said, and he was always very articulate, even though he was angry and frustrated that his stature in and out of the game didn't seem to make a difference.

Adam Goodes was booed cause he was a dirty player - Why did the booing only start after the Australian of the Year Speech?

Adam Goodes was booed cause he tried to divide a country on a Australia day with his words - His speech is a textbook example of education, inclusion and humility. Listen to it. He educated and challenged.

Adam Goodes was booed cause he humiliated a 14 year old girl in front of a country - He didn't, he called her out and then proceeded to tell the country to give her a break. He met with the kid and told her how her words made him feel. He educated and challenged.

Adam Goodes was booed cause he intimidated children with an imaginary spear he threw at them. I don't have words for this one.

Adam Goodes was booed for lots of reasons but its not racist cause everyone loves Cyril Rioli. This is the one we need educate the likes of Drubbing on. Goodes was a challenger and at the end of the day we didn't like being challenged by an aboriginal about our shameful past.

If the booing of Adam Goodes was not racist you'd only need one explanation as to why it wasn't.

I managed to watch the doco last night so thankfully was able to ff through the advertising blitz.
I was numbed by the senseless of it all and enfuriated by the constant priveleged white fella commenatary that clearly inflamed the situation.
It beggars belief that one in particular is still in a position of power despite numerous ‘slips of the tongue’.

What gets me is how can you come away from viewing that documentary and have the energy to defend the actions as not being racist? And why do you feel the need to?

Call it for what is Australia, Adam Goodes won't judge you. He's not the type.

Yes, I'm sure there are racist elements in crowds who booed Goodes for the list of things you and the doco brought up. But It's not as simple as that. Their binary opposites in that doco were Goodes, Nicky Winmar and Alan Jones and Sam Newman. That sets up an argument of either it's all racist, or it's not.

I have nothing but admiration for what Goodes did to challenge people. I looked at what he did on the field as a player, and thought it sad to see him resort playing for frees, when he didn't need to.

I get that many might have seen him as a blackfella that didn't know his place, which was the racism the doco clearly highlighted, and hopefully it did.

Drubbing, what are your thoughts on Walters then? He is the #1 stager in the AFL currently, without a shadow of doubt.

I doubt he's #1. Not even top 10 while WC are still in the comp.

Even so, it's a part of his game I'm not a fan of. It's probably out of frustration at not getting the frees he should get, and do they miss plenty.

"Their binary opposites in that doco were Goodes, Nicky Winmar and Alan Jones and Sam Newman. That sets up an argument of either it's all racist, or it's not" - yep Drubbing - you're not wrong - the doco is based on the premise that the booing was racist, and that people like Alan Jones, Sam Newman and Andrew Bolt are racist white men. I think it rams that point home successfully. And as Hypen said, why even put energy into arguing that the whole Adam Goodes saga wasn't racist?

And even mentioning Michael Walters (allegedly) staging sinks the argument: Why isn't Walters mercilessly booed in every game he plays in? The point is that if Walters did exactly what Goodes did - hear and call out racism from the crowd, plus endure shocking racism in the media - then get Australian Of The Year - and then use that public profile to continue to call out racism where he sees it with great dignity and pride - well - he might have been singled-out for the negative attention that Goodes got.

Let's hope that Australian society (and the AFL) learned from the Goodes situation. Never again.
