TOPIC: How to spot good coaching

The article talks about the new model for a senior coach. That's just more of the same. Football is always looking for a magic formula, doing things by numbers instead of having to make good decisions.

Middle of the road clubs will chase up people with the same sort of resume as Fagan and never get another Fagan because they didn't ever understand what was good about him (assuming he's any good), they just ticked boxes.

No you've missed the point.

The article highlights the not so new model for effective senior leadership. Autonomy, delegation, set the direction and stay out of the detail, holding people to account, personable, calm and empathetic.

It seeks to move the position away from Paul Roos who is hands-on trying to slow the game to a point it's unwatchable.

I understand why Fagan might be a good choice. He has a lot of obvious skills. The thing is though that it always comes down to someone with good judgement who makes good decisions more often than they make bad ones.

Kevin Sheedy had all those skills, without obviously having them in his resume. If they'd tried to hire a Kevin Sheedy they'd look for someone with a quirky sense of humour who could do a bit of plumbing.

Carlton are likely to hire a coach now because he's got an MBA and spent a few years in Tasmania.

St Kilda will hire Chris Bond.

No. He doesn't make decisions - that's the point.

And I promise you central to our woes is two highly egotistical borderline narcissistic men suffocating the place with their need to make decisions good or bad that are not for them to make.

He makes decisions all the time. That's his job. He's management. He might trust other people to make decisions as well, but he makes the decision about who to trust and when to can them.

Peter Bell and Chris Bond have both made the decision to keep our fitness blokes. That's a reflection on their judgement.

Even Dale Alcock has made a decision to never make any decisions.

No it's not his job. His job is to set the game plan and hold people accountable to the execution of it.

It's not to take training, over ride recruiters, shut down assistant coaches when they disagree with him, rehash the field positions at the breaks. There's specialists for that.

Whose managing the specialists if he's doing their job?

This is all why our club is falling over.

I don't think Freo were as unwatchable at any point pre 2012 as they have been for the last 4 years. We saw advances from what we were given to start our club, through to the Pav/Haze/Jeffery/Luke years, and were about to take the next step, a step that someone like Sheedy or Chocco could have taken us to. Whether as a mentor to Mark Harvey, or coach in his own right, but we ended up with the polar opposite, and look where we are now. But, at least if we start with the right coach now, we have a list capable of winning a flag.
