My point is that while some coaches may coach to extremes within the paradigm, the problem is systemic. It wasn't a Lyon bashing exercise.

Fitness & general fatigue in the 2nd half of the season is definitely a problem.
Not just physical, mental as well.

Derby, most of the points you make from the studies into various sports, have been made many times on this forum over the last 4 years. This, by simple observation, not through scientific study. As Shane says, a coach is going to take the AFL by storm, simply by selecting players on ability, managing their training appropriately and allowing them to play attacking footy.

Defending against a team playing on instinct is much harder than defending against a team playing to set game plans, especially defensive game plans, and letting loose players like Harley (sadly not now an option, the Hills, Walters, Cerra, Wilson, Ryan & co would see us win more games than we lose. Provided their training workload is managed. If they are working their butts off on game day, they don't need to be run into the ground during the week.

And when the AFL reduced the number of rotations, players were left out there longer - you couldn't take your "fast burst" player off when you wanted to.

That's not true at all. That's a choice coaches make.

I thought the AFL capped the number of rotations?

Rotating players to get maximum endurance out of them is a choice that coaches make.

There's no rule which says you have to be constantly rotating players, there's no limit to how long a player can remain on the bench or on the ground, and it wasn't that long ago that the number of rotations went nowhere near the current cap.

It's a mindset.

Wow, these threads really do take on a life of their own. Before you know it we’ve gone from Peel to rotations. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Yeah, I understand Shane. Its just that by imposing a cap on rotations the AFL has removed some flexibility from what a coach can do.
And maybe some coaches have not adjusted to these limitations as well as others.

If we're talking about giving players more time on the bench to come on as impact players, you don't need to use the interchange as often.

Unless you just want to bring them on for shorter periods. You can get 50 minutes of game time in 10 lots of 5 minutes, or in 5 lots of 10 minutes.

To my way of thinking, you would pick your best 22 players, and have your best 18 spend as much time on the ground as possible. But that is a very old fashioned view, I know.
