TOPIC: So why didn't we pick up Ian Hill again?

Give them a b...y go! And when we do let 'em play, give them their heads to be the players that they were when our attention was drawn to them.

Don't stifle them with a peabrained defensive game plan, only allowing them to be role players.

Playing Cerra down back is criminal, and the way he's played Hodor & Crowden is a joke.

On the whole I reckon our younger recruits in the last 4 years are coming along fairly well and improving.

Luke Ryan and Alex Pearce look brilliant as defenders. Brayshaw and Cerra have only played 1.5 seasons and both going pretty well. Brayshaw is a running and tackling machine and will only get better. I would like to see Cerra forward a bit more because he seems to have a natural sense for the goals. But half back doesn’t seem a great position for him.

Blakely seems to be finding it hard to get into his best form after quite a while out but he will get there. Hughes and Tucker are building into dependable players.

Darcy is carrying the ruck at such a young age and probably exceeding expectations. Sure he has faded a bit in a few games this year but I can’t think of too many other ruckman his age that are doing as well.

Logue will get better with more games but he needs some more coaching and mentoring. He isn’t ready to take on the best forwards yet but he could be in a couple of years. Remember how much footy he has missed through injury which would have delayed his development. We can add Nyhuis and Duman to the list of improving defenders.

What is evident is that we have developed some good defenders and some half back/midfield types but not so much line breaking attacking players and small forwards. I would like to see young blokes with pace bursting through the middle of the ground more often.

Switkowski has speed but he’s basically been asked to be a defender at the wrong end of the ground (which he’s proving to be pretty good at).

Is Langdon looking for a new home? He’s been brilliant for a 23 year old #54 pick and I would be surprised if he doesn’t finish the year of strongly because he’ll either be pushing for a solid contract renewal or beef up his trade value.

Yet even with this reasonable talent pool and our experienced group of players we are struggling. Although they show individual potential they just aren’t connecting well enough as a team. By all means if we can find a Stack or a Kelly then that’s great but I reckon our coaches got more than enough to work with.

So right Yeti. Just another area that we fail in.

Mundy, if managed and played in the right position could have had another 2 or 3 seasons of really good footy in him, playing forward as a leader and structure setup tactician. So why is he burning out in the guts while a natural midfielder like Blakely is wasted across half back. No other team in the comp, with their present lists would play Blakely back of the centre if they had him on their squad.

When was the last time Fremantle uncovered a gem outside the draft top 30? Luke Ryan? Nat Fyfe? Alex Pearce?

In the last couple of years alone west coast has uncovered Ryan, Petruccelle, Rioli, Allen and Cameron. Our recent mature age picks have been Schulz, Bewley, Switkowski, Jones, and Banfield. None of these look like establishing themselves in the team and are not dominating at wafl level except for Banfield. Schulz and Switkowski have been recruited as forwards yet kick very few goals, even at Peel. Traded into the team have been Conca, Matera, Hogan, Wilson,Lobb, Kersten, Bennell, and Maccarthy. Lobb has been the best of these so far. Wilson gets a pass, Matera has been sort of okay and the rest have struggled. Of the recent recruits, Brayshaw has probably been the best, Cerra is getting there, Tucker is coming along nicely, Logue is an unknown quantity still, Sturt who knows, Valente who knows, Crowden and Giro at least dominate wafl but can't make the transition to afl. Nyhuis and Duman who knows could go either way.

I find it impossible to judge our coach without analysing our recruiting and list management. It has been exceptionally poor for a long time. I feel sorry for the next coach because how much can be achieved with 10-15 good players but almost zero depth? In our prime 6 years ago, guys like DeBoer, Muzungu and Clancee were fringe players. They would be first picked at the moment. Add to this the imminent retirements of Mundy, Ballantyne and Sandilands. There is a perception that the rebuild is going to plan but I disagree. The amount of genuinely young players that are good enough is actually very small. The decent early season form has papered over the cracks in the list and 2 or 3 injuries has almost totally wiped out the teams form. From what I can gather the recruiting is still Victorian based which would be okay if they were any good at it. They aren't. Move it back here and increase the focus on the local players as west coast do.

Ross Lyon is finished. It is just a matter of time. He may get to coach next season but I don't think he will. There will certainly be no 2020 flag. I am hoping that the board does the right thing by the next coach, removes the ceo, replaces recruiting staff while it has the opportunity, and starts afresh. Otherwise the incoming coach will be another lame duck that loses the goodwill of the fans in record time.

Austin Robertson, one of the great full forwards, a fantastic kick and avowed Dockers supporter, writes a weekly sports column in the Post Newspaper.
In the latest issue, written after the derby, he sums up the current situation at the Dockers.
He is particularly savage on Brad Lloyd and his atrocious list management and not very impressed with his successor.
I wonder if any of the Dockers hierarchy have read this column?
If not they bl**dy well should.

I still blame the coaching of our recruits once they get to Freo, rather than the footy ability of the recruits. Have a look from that angle, Goodie.
