RM it was a combination, walking with packs to build endurance and mental toughness, practicing weapons drills so they became instinctive and you could do them blind folded, then practising shooting under all conditions to maximise efficiency. You cant just have a bunch of blokes who can run all day or who can just shoot, its a blend of skills to make the complete soldier. I see it as the same for a footy team good leadership, good skills, good instincts with a strong fitness base and clearly defined methods for all conditions.

The difference between us and the other mob is they have never accepted mediocrity. This was set from year one when Alexander was sacked, thenTodd 2 years later leading to Malthouse winning them 2 flags. It continues today, Simpson almost was ousted in 2017 but saved himself, if he misses the final he knows he is gone.

We've never had that approach Neesham never made finals in 4 years, Drum less said the better, Connolly got in 2 finals series in 6 seasons, Harvey got us there once. Lyon the saviour had 3 and a half good years 12 got us to finals, 13 the gf, 14 finals, 15 the wheels fell off after a great start we won the minor premiership and meekly surrendered in the finals, since then we have been serving the same rubbish for four years.

The other mob would have sacked him half wY through 2016. It's how they work and why they are successful, and why we are not.

I believe the problem has been the club has always recruit average players and if we get a good young draft pick they are also played out of their strength position in a team which are trying to survive each game.
We were doing that with a mature average recruit Hogan playing a non forward position.
I know Lobb didn't want to be our number one ruckman when recruited

Bpurple is pretty much spot on, in fact it appears obvious to us supporters. That it doesn't appear obvious to the people running it, is amazing.

We have good players from 300 games down to 1st and 2nd seasons, including a Brownlow Medallist, Premiership players from other teams and high draft picks.

The team has improved every season since 2016 in the FIRST HALF of the year.

The team has disintegrated in the SECOND HALF every season since 2014.

In hindsight, the last 3 weeks are no surprise. At 7-6 and a good win against Port, there is always optimism and the inevitable drop-off is forgotten.

Now, no one is looking forward to playing Hawthorn in Tasmania and Geelong later this year.

Sustained mediocrity for 25 years is only fractionally the current problem. The main problem is an effort-based game plan under the current coach, leading to poor forward line organisation and lack of skills.

The effort is there but you can't sprint for the first 20km in a marathon. The bloke from Scotland tried that in the Commonwealth Games and just about killed himself. The bloke who ran the first marathon did kill himself.

Past players at North Melb (David King) and Carlton seemed to be able to exert an influence on board members and they have sufficient credibility to get their opinions heard in the media.
