That’s missing the point.

We have a coach. It’s often raised here that he’s not up to the job. Fair enough, that’s always up for debate. I was merely pointing out his CV to Sumich, not criticising Sumich for what he hasn’t achieved ie being selected to be an AFL coach.

He may be a good option, I wish him well.

Lots of things are often raised here and those things are usually argued about.

If Sumich came to Fremantle it would be because Ross Lyon had left or the club had sacked him, so it's beside the point what people think about Ross.

Outhouse can bang on all he likes about the difference between senior coach and ass coach but the fact remains that every coach is pretty much an unknown quantity until he performs in the job.

Even Clarkson, arguably the best of the modern coaches was an untried, unknown quantity when he got his first senior coaching gig.

All you can do is make a semi-educated guess as to someone's potential and hope that it works out. It usually doesn't but sometimes you manage to unearth a Clarkson or a Simpson. Then you get the chocolates,

You don't find those blokes without putting them in a job for a while to see how well they perform

It would be a very dockery docker moment to look back on in years to come, after three years of completely turning our list over, and sitting inside the eight, with most of the football world thinking we are on the right track to sack our coach.
I can see it now. Carlton with a list full of first round picks, grab discarded coach and proceed to fulfill on this potential.
Imagine if we were to then follow Carlton’s trajectory after offloading Ratten.
I don’t know if I could tolerate the ridicule that would accompany that course.
Lyon has another year to run on his contract. We don’t need to act brashly We have time and will know by the middle of next year without dropping a million bucks.

No Noddy, there is nothing more to it than that. People might like to pretend otherwise, do their due diligence, measure the candidate against kpi's, cast runes, consult the oracle...

But in the end you just have to take a punt on someone. Take Mark Harvey - what might have been for him if we hadn't had a horror year for injuries in 2011? How might Rattan have gone at Carlton if the idiots hadn't replaced him with Malthouse? If you planned properly, would you ever recruit a Malcolm Blight?

Next year I can tell you that I knew five seasons ago.

Sumo has done well, no doubt about it. But you have to remember he had the pick of the bunch from this state's best footy under 18s in a limited competition of relatively equal talent pools of the same age. Good on him, but the pros are a whole different ball game.

Sumich has thrown his hat into the ring for a number of senior coaching jobs and been unsuccessful each time. Just sayin’.

Michael Broadbridge was a very successful under 18’s coach but didn’t transfer that success into senior WAFL coaching. Again, just sayin’.

Noddy, Parkin, Pagan, and Roos. 3 coaches who have done more to ruin the spectacle of footy than any other coaches in footy history, evidence; the coaching style of Lyon and Wallace for starters. The fact that Summa is from outside that influence is a plus to me.
