I've had enough of the abuse of Brennan Cox in the past fortnight. The kid is trying to hold together a makeshift forwardline being coached by RL in wet slippery conditions and everyone wants to throw the boot in. He was awesome last year and did great stuff in the pre-season before injury struck him down and ruined his ability to run.

He's come back into the side as a 20yo KPF with no real support (McCarthy isn't a KPF let alone Banfield) and hasn't kicked a bag of goals so everyone is off him? Get a grip. There are no KPF's at that age taking the comp by storm. Look at Naughton who's doing the same thing at the Dogs and is probably the only comparable forward or Allen at the OOFTIT's. They aren't setting the world on fire and are very similar stats wise.

Naughton has the disadvantage of playing his first season mostly down back which effects his career averages but is comparable to Cox who's spent a lot of time in the ruck or down back early. Allen is the same age as Cox and has the added benefit of being the third tall behind two of the best KPF's in the comp so draws a much smaller opponent than Cox or Naughton.

Player - Games - Disposals (ave) - Marks (ave) - Tackles (ave) - Goals - Behinds
Cox - 34 - 11 - 4.3 - 2.2 - 27 - 27
Naughton - 32 - 11.1 - 4.8 - 1.9 - 20 - 18
Allen - 15 - 9.5 - 3.4 - 2.3 - 12 - 11

Cox hasn't played his best games the past 2 weeks but the conditions have been horrible. Give him a break and let him learn. He's done some amazing things too and is performing better than anyone else around his age (the above 3 players are the only KPF's who are 20 or under doing anything).

On a related note, I'm sick of hearing people talk about him being a defender before being drafted. He also played forward in most of his games but was moved around at the championships to showcase what he can do. Selecting him at CHB in the AA side was to fit him in the side rather than an indication of where he should play or is best suited.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz modern day footy is all about run and carry. Have a look at the current crop of forwards and you'll see mid-forward runners like Seedsman and unbelievably quick talls like Cameron.
Cox falls into the same category as Darcy - too slow and lacking agility. Opposition coaches will instruct their players to run off these guys all day.
The Max Gawn ruckman and the De Goey forward is the future. I dont think the criticism of Cox is personal, rather a reflection of our list management and selection woes.

Gawn isn't quick. Neither is Mundy, Pendlebury or Barlow. if you're looking at key position players then Hawkins isn't quick, Ben Brown the same, Tex Walker.

Cox is no different to those players and he's proven he has the talent and footy brain. He knows where to go and what to do before most other players and creates space with his movement. You don't have to be lightening quick to be good at footy and you definitely don't to play a key position.

On another note, anyone calling him lazy needs to have a serious rethink about the requirements to play AFL football and look back to Manic's early days on the list. Then also remember he's on the comeback from a serious hamstring injury that would have killed off the pre-season running he completed and that he's registered the furthest distance covered by a Freo player in several games last season.

Maybe the rowing coach made a blunder when they recruited him...

Cox is a great talent and for his age he shows us just what we can look forward to. For the next 2 years I would see him as a work in progress not as the next Pav. Big guys take time to mature and toughen up. We have to be patient and hope that Hogan, Lobb, Macca and Tabs can lead the way for the next 3 years while Brendan and Dixon also can learn the caper.

I can’t recall any direct abuse of Cox on these threads. It’s been pointed out that he probably isn’t good enough to be in the team at the moment but discussing team selection and performance is different to abuse.
No one that runs out wants to perform poorly and i am sure he is giving his all.

Biz agree that heavy criticism of Cox is premature at this point in time as he still has plenty of upside.
The same leniency could also be extended to the teams performance over the past two weeks. We have had a 21 & 20 year old leading our ruck and forward line.
Having said that if Sandi and Lobb are ready to go this week, I would select both and drop Darcy and Cox.
How does anyone think West Coast would go without, Kennedy, Darling, Natanui, Hickey, Gaff and Barrass. Structurally this is effectively where we have been at the moment, without Sandi, Lobb, Taberner, Pearce, Hill and Hogan.
How would Oscar Allen and Brander hold up.

I once highlighted Mundy's poor performance in the early years and Shane Richmond banned me from Dockerland for two years.

Brennan Cox is the SPS of Fremantle. Plays two good games a year.

You are doing the lords work Hypen, I appreciate your intent!

Cox has been called lazy and useless over the past couple of weeks. It's been said he's not good enough, too slow, half hearted and that he wouldn't get a gig at Hawthorn. I can tell you none of that's true and he'd absolutely be playing at Hawthorn who have so few KPF's, they keep taking their best defender and throwing him there. They let Mitch Lewis lead their forwardline and alternate between him and Roughy who struggles to get a kick these days.

Conditions are expected to be fine on Saturday so hopefully a good day to be a marking forward. Banfield was played as a tall target ahead of the ball and it didn't work whatsoever. The ideal scenario is Cox is that player partnering Lobb and McCarthy gets to be the third tall leading all over the place and taking marks on a smaller opponent.

Cox should not be the one on the way out unless you're expecting a lot of rain.

I was excited when we drafted Cox at what seemed like a steal in draft after he was named U18 AA at CHB thinking he was going to be our future AA CHB.

Having watched intently the last two seasons at first I was confused by the move to make him a forward but I think it was done based on his lack of agility and speed which would expose him as a defender in 1 on 1 contests when the forward leads at the ball carrier.

I think he's coming along nicely and shows good footy nous. He seems to be a bit flat footed and slow at times and his reactions seem to be 1/2 second behind but he gets to good spots and seems to have a good mark and kick.

I think with a good preseason, maybe a little bit lighter and working on improving his agility and off the mark pace he will be a solid KPP.
